I'm in z7b, and a brug I received from HorseShoe is happy taking root in a rather large clay pot. I received it a couple months ago, and figured a rich potting mix in a clay pot would make a suitable home until I learn more for next year.
Should I bring it in now, or leave it out a while yet?
TIA,
-Jennifer
When do I bring it in?
Just make sure you bring it in before a frost AngelSong and it should be fine.
Kell is right. Keep a check on the weather and bring it in when the temps are going to go below 40što be on the safe side.
I have purchased two supposedly hearty, varigated varieties from Plants Delights nurseries in NC that are supposed to winter ovr in z7b.(Snowbank and Sunset)
Anyone know about these? Should I prune them back?
Make cuttings, or what?
I don't think I would let either one of them winter over outside. Maybe I'm just a wimp, but I would be afraid of losing them, even in your zone. We never really know for sure what the weather is going to be like in the winter and the worst part is that they will die down to the ground and it will take some time for them to come back to blooming size. This is just my opinion and others might advise you differently. Good luck whatever way you go.
Pollygardening, I live in 7B in NC and the one I left out last year did not make it. It was mulched and a 20 gallon pot full of mulched leaves were put over it but it didn't make it. I'd bring them in if they were mine.
7b here and i wouldn't leave them out either.
I appreciate the advice, but they are not potted at the moment -- maybe I'll save the "snowbank" because it is not but 4 feet, but the "sunset" has been moved once already, and it is 7 feet.
I'll take some cuttings from it, first; (all my pottings have to go into the guest room; the utility room has been converted into my breeding doggie area).
When I bought these, I understood they were able to withstand our winters. The last annual ones I brought in developed mites and bugs -- what do you spray them with before you bring them in?
I don't spray mine before I bring them in. The mites don't usually show up on my plants until January. Then I spray with Avid or some other miticide. Usually one spraying takes care of them.
Thanks everybody ... I'll keep an eye on the weather, and get them in as soon as it looks frosty in the forecast.
:)
