pics of the inside of my after work getaway.
just a few
Pretty bloom. Is that the one that smells so bad?
David, I love your greenhouse and how you designed it, cool and your plants look great! Thanks for sharing
that bloom smells like a combinatioon of bleu cheese, dirty socks, dirty underewear, armpit, and dog poop all rolled up into a flower!!! Anyone who doesn't believe me i'll send you one! Bet you'll send um back!
Flies love them and by tommorow afternoon that pretty flower will be squirming with maggots. Excuse me for being so graphic in my description but it's true!
Flies are God's way of pollinating those flowers because it is about 99.9% impossible to pollinate them by hand. The flies can get into the reproductive parts of them and we can't.
the stapelias are another of my passions. Someplace in between my brugs and my cats.
Great fountain. It will help keep the humidity up in the greenhouse. Nice pictures David....I'll pass on the smelly one!! LOL!!
Beautiful GH and your plants look so healthy.
Great pics David. Funny a bunch of us were just talking about stapelias. I was intrigued until I read your enticing descriptions, me and the maggots! LOL.
Great getaway. Looks so soothing.
Great pictures!! Good thing the bloom is so interesting... ummm but the smell?? LOL great description! Gross! :o)
Acckkk.....that's what I thought it smelled like. I'll pass also.
Do you have any Clivia?
Kell, I grow around 70 varieties of them. You should smell the gh when several are blooming at once.
Hibiscus,I don't have any clivia but have thought many times about getting one. Just haven't made up my mind to do it yet.
Kind of interesting that I grow the best(brugmansia) and worst(stapelia) smelling flowers in the world. In the same gh!!
The stapelias really are just as addicting as the brugs. You just have to give them a chance. But once you see some of the differnt flowers you're hooked.
I have heard that about them. I wish I could remember who had them. I know Ma Vie has in the past. But someone had tons like you. LOL I wonder if it was you and I did not connect you to the other name! I will have to ask Susie.
Yuck, that sounds wonderful. I bet with both those and the brug's are bloom the smell is almost nauseating (sp) Hey Kell, have you noticed that the Iochroma's if you brush their leaves too hard or they get to dry have a dirty feet smell?
no but last night I was out over by my huge one and there was an off odd smell. I though maybe a skunk had run thru there. I will check it out. Tracey were you part of our stapelias talk?
David, I can see why you can find peace and relaxation in your greenhouse. There are many beauties in there and before long, all your brug cuttings and plants will be in there. Aren't greenhouse wonderful in the winter also. . so nice and warm when it is cold outside. Is that a ric-rac epiphylium in that basket and if so, has it ever bloomed? Thanks for showing us all your pictures.
Great job on the greenhouse David. I love to work in mine when it's raining.
Frannie, that is a ric-rac. I just got it last year from this place in Florida that frequents this area selling to some of the local nurseries. One of th ose nurseries in particular named True Blue was not willing to find out for me what varieties of cactus this place had. He lied to me in the begining by telling me that all of his cactus come out of Texas. When I found out it was a lie one of his employees gave me the name and number of the place.
He gets all of them from Florida at a placec called Witt's nursery. NO web page though.
Thte ri-rac is in the original pot tah I bought it in and has more than tripled in size since getting it.
Now for the answer to your question. No it hasn't bloomed for me yet. My grandmother had a very large one years ago and we never saw it bloom. I didn't even know until a little over a yerar ago that it did produce a flower.
I've seen it in pics and the bloom is really pretty.
Do you have one and if so has it bloomed for you?
The people from the gas company are supposed to be hear today sometime today with my 100G propane tank. That'll be nice so I can go ahead and get my heater connected and ready for the "BIG" chill.
I'm also planning on getting the electricity installed within the next week or so. It's just too much trouble trying to keep things going with an extension cord.
David your greenhouse is so neat and tidy! I'd love to be able to spend winter months in there. It looks like the perfect getaway.
Heyyyyyyyyyy, DH got my GH set up, lol it's not as fancy as yours catsmeow but hey, it's all ready for my little things to go inside :-) Im sooooooo happy, think Im gonna do the happy dance now, hehehe...
We got a screened tent and put it up, lined the inside all the way around with heavy bisqueen, on the floor of it too, taped the seams together with clear heavy duty tape and it actually felt warm in there tonight. We got a heater thats controlled by temperature and wooooo lahhhhhh! I think it will keep my little babies safe this winter from the cold and keep the moisture in, at the same time it will have light.
Had to share this, cos' I really am happy we got something at least till we can afford something like Catsmeow's :-)
This will be my getaway too :-)
Happy for you gabby. I too got a GH this spring, made me happier than anything I've ever had before.
David your greenhouse looks so nice. i bet the fountain does help with the humidity. i had a couple of Stapelias a few years ago, didn't like the smell, but the blooms were very interesting. Glad you share your pics. How big is your GH and where are your brugs. Most of the cuttings you sent are showing signs of growth. How is Snowbank doing. i have two rooted cuttins of S. Thanks again,. Donna
David, I just got 4 pieces of it this summer and therefore no blooms yet. I hope the people from the gas company got there today.
rutholive, the snowbank fizzled away. Gone to brug Heaven. Most of my large brugs(at least 26) are planted in rows right behind the gh.I have just recently made that area larger and it will accomodate at least 18-20 more in the spring. I have others just planted here and there around the yard and I have many, many new cuttings and small plants in the gh and those will stay in there until spring.
My gh is 12W x 10H x 18L and it's packed to capacity !!!
I was very fortunate to have had all of the material for that gh donated to me by different people. A friend of my dad's gave him the frame because he no longer had use for it. I was originally covered with a tarp and had a boat under it before we got it. Another friend gave us some lumber that was no longer needed for a job they were doing so that's what it is boxed in with. So really all I had to purchase was the fiberglass panels.
It's been a great investment though. I feel like i'm on vacation when I go inside with the plants. During the summer it's kind of drab though because it's empty.
Frannie,
no they didn't show up today either. Don't know what the holdup is.
David, what are the little plants on the left plant called, the leaves are roundish...there's an orange flower if I see that correctly...
Your green house is awesome Cats. Nice
David, you are so organized. When I had my greenhouse, it was so jammed packed in the Winter, you couldn't get inside. I think the main reason for this was that I always waited until we were going to have a freeze before I moved anything into it. By that time, I was so cold, I practically threw things in. lol
the plant with the little orange flower is a volunteer nasturtium. I have 3 large plumerias and this spring and summer I had nasturtiums planted at the base of them all. Those have recently been pulled out and a few of the seeds that dropped in the pots came up and are blooming now.
I had to pull the mother plants out because they had spread down the pot side and about 10ft into my yard.
Boy David, it didn't take you long to fill 'er up.
oh it was full when I posted those first pics. The first set was taken in the back half of the gh and the new ones from the front so you see everyting now.
It's full and I still have a few things that need to go in there.
I must have this in my pot...its kinda neat so I left it alone. Thank you for clarifying what that was lol...
