I have a very close friend that lives in Germany. Now, the question, what is he allowed to send to us? Brinda saw a photo of "Bambina" & says she must have it. Will a German brug be happy in Calif? Does anyone have german brug links?
Thanks,
Bambi
Brugs From Germany
here is where you can find that one and more, be careful it is addicting......http://kirchner-abel.de/site/home.htm
be sure and read up about the 2 year quarantine. and don't forget, as nice as all these people are, one of ours was turned in to the federal ag agents to check to see if they had "illegal european brugs". she didn't, thank goodness. just a warning, sometimes people turn, the brug lust gets the best of them.
I decided long ago to do seeds and not lust, that way i can cut them up when i want to.
Good for you Arlene. If I was better at starting brug seeds, I would go that route also.
Gloria, virus and other diseases are not transmitted through seeds. With seeds, you are always on the safe side.
However, it has to be a good and reliable source to not to end up with more 'Frosty Pinks'.
Quarantined plants are a loss for two years because no pollination and no seeds!
Yes if you are going to order make sure you go through proper channels, it is not that big of a deal. They will come and make sure you have the room to keep them seperate. In Missouri 10ft. They will also check with you a couple of times in a two year period. It is not worth the risk to get plants any other way, you are taking a chance in bringing in deadly virus, that won't only kill brugmansia, but could wipe out our tomato and other crops. If you do it right the plants are checked before shipment, when they reach port, and during their growing. Keeping you out of some big trouble.
Gloria, keep planting those seeds, you'll do fine. besides, look at all the USA beauties from this year -- you know it won't be that long til they make their way to us, by trade or buying them. we know tons of brug people, right? lolol.
I bet German brugs would love California! I hope you get some Bambi!!! 2 years is not that long to wait. LOL
I wonder why you are not allowed to pollinate and make seeds when in quarantine if the seeds produced won't have the virus if one is present and the pollen from the quarantined brugs is also virus free.
What if a moth pollinates and makes seed?
I don't quite understand about the quarantine? Do you get to quarantine your brugs at home or do the brugs have to stay with a brugie guard in brugie jail for 2 years? Does this Quarantine apply to all of Europe?
Can someone come to visit you with a bouquet of brugs in their suitcase?
You would think there are much more important things to keep out of the country than a brug! What possible harm could a beautiful fragrant flower cause?
Thanks Arlene, I am still planting those seeds, but it breaks my heart when I lose a couple, just know that was the special one(dbl. Pink)!
Gloria.....you will make beauties, there is no doubt about it!
Backtoback.... our friend came from germany a couple of weeks ago. ask him how it was in customs.... and it can be a very large fine. of course, we would have loved him to bring stuff but it is against the law.
there are many rumors that some one from HHG brought in a very large quantity of seeds, that a brug group is growing out now.
good luck, i hope you have every brug that you want someday.
We are an agricultural state and FDA wants no bad buggies to come to town.
It's amazing. We can keep all the beautiful European brugs out, but haven't managed to find a way to keep out the terrorists. hmmm
they have dogs at the airport and take plants pretty serious. It just wouldn't be worth getting someone in trouble for a flower.
You are just going thru what every newbie does, brug lust! Soon you will realize the German brugs are but fantasy and concentrate on making the ones we have here better. All it takes is one of us with a vision and lots and lots of growing space. LOL.
Ok, we have the growing space, you guys have the "vision".
Let's do it!
Just a few notes I thought you might find interesting...
Arlene any idea who the group was?
In 1994-1996,asparagus was tested for pollen transmission of virus and it was found that virus was transmitted by pollen.Lincoln University, New Zealand
International Symposium on fruit tree viruses, UK found that three different cherry tree viruses were transmitted by pollen.
Blueberry leaf mottle virus is spread by honeybees harvesting pollen.Bees were caged with virus infected blueberry bushes. Pollen was "washed" from the honeybees and tested for virus and was positive.
From a German Orchid site:
Viruses are transmitted by pollen and seed in orchids.
From the ELISA site:
Barley stripe mosaic-transmitted by pollen and seeds
Maize dwarf mosaic-transmitted by seeds
Rice xanthomonas cam. virus-seeds and pollen, spread by the wind.
Idaeovirus=transmitted by pollen to the seed.
There are about a hundred viruses that are transmitted by pollen and/or seed. Datura poty virus is one of those. There is nothing one can do to the seed once it is infected to remove the virus.
Tracy, it's a rumor, can't say and shouldn't have said here i guess. the whole procedure is confusing to me, seeds are allowed in with phyto with no holding time, pollen can come in all by itself, 2 years quarantine on plants. sounds to me like government work, lol.... makes no sense. but there you go, i just read presseil donated seeds in south florida.... surely they had a phyto? and i guess no virus or he wouldn't have sent them here? there are many euro genes in the USA now, which was my main point. in the old days we looked at pics and drooled, not realizing maybe the plant bloomed once every 3 years or the flowers didn't last a day. it's great to be making our own new brugs here, from our own USA seeds, and keep the best.
Would I be wrong to say that the Europeans have only the same gene pool to work with as we do here in the USA? Our hybrids should be equal to theirs, unless they have access to some species we do not have to work with.
As far as the virus, it must be present in all seeds, as a stressed plant can exhibit the virus whereas a healthy one has some immunity.
They've had Rothkirch for a while, Ocre and monika's Rubirosa, Apricot Queen, along with others that we still don't have here (only one here is RK and the AQ that is being traded is still unsure). we have some catching up to do.
i think we are impressed with ocre and RK because of the beautiful dark pink babies they make. we have those genes here in many hybrids, and thanks to some great european hybridizers, we've also gotten some good pollen. i personally believe, though i could surely be wrong, that most viruses are present in all brugs, just waiting for the right conditions to show itself.
I agree with you John, and the new beauties this year from the USA shows we pretty much have what we need.
Arlene, you are right. I have seen some wonderful US Brugs:-)
tiG, I am suspicious of the 'Apricot Queen'; did yours bloom?
not yet, but I think the others that have aren't what they were labeled, right? makes me suspicious too.
The information from a well reputated european institute of Phytomedicine is, that it is possible to raise healthy Brugmansia from seeds. And they stay healthy until a vector like aphids, comes for dinner LOL!
To exclude all possibilities, I soak all my seeds in a desinfectant solution for 24 hrs.
Some viruses can be transmitted through seeds. Brugmansias do not belong to this category.
monika, do you use bleach as your disinfectant or something else?
Monika:
Do you soak the seeds in the disinfectant solution before peeling them?
I seek the seeds in a Benzoe acid solution. It kills any virus, fungus and bacteria. I dont peel them at all. I use this desinfectant for cleaning and desinfecting the boards, the sand in the propagation beds, pots, I even water and spray the plants with a 0,1 dilution. The same dilution is in the water glasses in which I root the cuttings.
Bleach doesnt not kill all virus.
It sounds like the Physan 21 we talked about on an earlier thread. I've been watering my seeds in with a dilute Physan solution.
thanks poppy, I was searching links on benzoic acid, and you saved me a bunch of time.
Not sure if it's the same active ingredients.... but it's supposed to kill bacteria, fungus, and viruses. You can use it on other plants besides brugs too.
i thought physan was mainly hydrogen peroxide? i haven't found it around here yet.
I dunno? It has the chemicals listed on the label... I can type them out, if you want to see? It's all Greek to me!
arlene, I ordered physan from wormsway.com
Thanks Poppysue, i looked it up. the base is ammonia, it does have benzyl something X 2 in it also. thanks for the link tig.
In Germany Physan does not have Benzoe acid as ingredient but something like ammoniun.......???
Benzoe acid was tested and recommended by a reputated institute.
Arlene, who is HHG? You did bring it up and I am wondering what you are implying? Do you think we have lots of illegal stuff floating around?
HHG= Herrenhauser Garten. As in Dr. Preissel. As Arelene stated, he brought seeds into Florida, no doubt through proper channels. It can be done if one is willing to do the paperwork.
Roz, it's a rumor. i'm not implying anything. HHG is Herrenhausen Garten.
