Ive heard you fertilize Brugs in spring twice weekly??? Any advice out there?
How often in Spring do you fertilize Brugs????
Some fertilize with a weaker solution everytime they water Anna.
I do not fertilze enough. But I would say if used at the right dilution, twice a week is fine. I also use timed release fertilzer along with foliar feeds and I also put out cheap HD fertilizer around each brug.
Hmmm I was told double strength ie 2 tsp per gal. water. That's what I have done these last few years and they grow fine. They also grow fine without it. Or at least they did this year because I wasn't able to do it. I think DH did once all summer.
At home, twice a week, till the end of Sept. then it is time to start thinking about cutting them back, then once I move them in the winterhouse I give them a really weak solution once a month on the larger plants, on week on the rooted cuttings. The seedlings I hit hard and heavy from Feb. till bloom. (every other day till May, then every third day)
Wow, thank you for all the advice!!! I think that's what I'll do...DH is fixing me a GH, Im excited about that :-) Thanks for your support in helping me. You are a great!!
Julie
I would do what Tracey does.... if you too want to grow up to be a brug princess!
lol I do Kell hehehe, I wanna be a brug princess when I grow up!!! :-)
I am in a rainy area so using water-soluble fertilizer is not always possible. What other regular fertilizing plan would you brugmaniacs recommend? Also, when should the plastic caps come off the rooted cuttings? Do you fertilize throughout the winter?
I fertilize one big scoop that comes in the miracle grow box to one gallon of water twice a week, and then water in for about 20 minutes and then when i know it is going to come a heavy long rain i sprinkle out 8-8-8 around my brugs that are well estabilishedand when it dissolves well I repeat when another good rain comes. At the first of the season i sprinkle out bone meal and blood meal like It says to on the box around allof my brugs including seedlings and work in to the ground good. I have tried worm casting fertilizer on several brugs this yaer and they grew 20% faster than the others but that could also be a gene thing
Kell will have to answer the caps question, I am way to humid here for the caps on Suttings, I just use those for seeds.

So when Im potting up rooted brug cuttings...youre saying I should put bone meal into the soil too and mix it up? Sounds like a good idea. Lmk...as for the Blood meal...I have none at the moment.
Yeah, what about the caps...? Are you potting your new cuttings inside a 2-3 litre pop bottle and putting a cap on? Ive seen this I think somewhere.
I would take the plastic caps off the brug cuttings when they are rooted well but watch because they have been used to having humidity around them all the time and they can get a little fussy about being without it. You might have to spray them a little until they get used to fresh air.
Thanks Brugie and springsong, but one question is still unanswered. Do you fertilize the newly rooted cuttings throughout the winter, too?
Thanks everyone posting information about fertilizing, it's really going to be alot of help.
How about during the winter months...just to clarify if Im correct, do you just fertilize once a month until Jan. or Feb?
I don't Fertilize during thw winter months, but now I put most of mine in the ground one foot down in the ground in the fall one stalk to a hole , then (hard wood cutting one foot long) mulch area and start looking for sprouts coming out of the ground in the spring. It has always worked for me here in alabama where i live, This will be the frist year that I try growing container brugs in side all winter I would like to know this question also do i fertilize them I would think so if you want them to grow to blooming size by spring, maybe miracle grow 1/2 tsp to a gallon water and water your rooted cuttings. I know it won't harm them Because I have put miracle grow in my rooting water but this is just my method
I give my rooted cuttings a half strength drink once a month during the winter and then in February, I start feeding them more, like full strength once a week, depending on if they need watering. I keep my brugs in the house and don't really want them to grow much until I can get them to the greenhouse or outside. That is why I don't fertilize much during the deep winter months.
