honey suckle question

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Hi everybody, my DH built me a very simple arbor over our double gates and I wanted to put a honey suckle or something very fragrant and flowery on it, especially since its near my bedroom window. I found the Gold Flame(heckrotii) and fell in love and finally found one locally, but, they wanted $25 for it and the label said slightly fragrant.hmmm. Anyone already have this? is it only slightly fragrant?any other suggestions for what I could put there? It gets the morning sun whereI will plant it but the arbor will be full to partial sun.

Hi,

I have pink Lemonaide, mine does not have much of a scent. I would plant Moon Flowers in the
spring, wonderful fragrances.
Can't really think of anything
beside maybe Jasmine.

Thanks Honeybee. I would love to plant a fragrant Jasmine but I dont know if there are any that are hardy in my zone. The ones Ive seen at HD so far are only good in the higher zones. Id like to have one I can plant outside and not have to worry about bringing it in for the winter as my living and dining rooms already look like a Guatamalan jungle come fall. I love it but dosnt leave much room for moving especially with the banana in a pot that my 4 yr old can play in.

I have the Gold Flame honeysuckle. I don't remember smelling any fragrance. It is a beautiful vine. One thing I do have that smells wonderfull in the late summer is Sweet Autumm clematis. Smell good - looks good. I love it!
Great climber...

I have Sweet Autumn too. It does have a wonderful scent. Don't know if it can take full
sun, I have mine in morning sun
with afternoon shade.

Dravencat, check with your local
Ag. agent, he should be able to tell you what would be hardy for your zone.

I had terrible problems with aphids on my honeysuckles. I had both Gold Flame and a red one (name escapes me right now). The hummingbirds love it... but so do aphids. I tore them out last year because they got to be suck a mess.

Some of the passion flowers are prolly hardy in your zone....

The plain ole Japenese Honeysuckle is the most fragrent and least troublesome I have. Has Yellow and white blooms. Birds, Bees, and Butterflies love it. Be glad to send you cuttings SASE if you like.

Beautiful photo Donna! Do you take your bird pics with a digital camera?

The Japanese grows more bush-like... wouldn't you say? It does here anyway. It yours a cultivar? Looks prettier than my wild ones.

Yes Poppy I use a Canon pro 90 IS. It is an awesome camera. Just wish it carried a little more pixs and had about 30mm more on the zoom.

OMGosh Donna that is a beautiful pick. If you wouldnt mind I would love a cutting, just let me know how much so I can get it to you. And how exactly do I root the cutting, put in water , soil or drown it in begging.lol I really like the look of the Gold Flame but more than anything I want the scent.
Thanks for all the help eveyone.
I might have to try that Sweet Autum Clematis too.
