As a kid I would find these in the early spring in flooded ponds in Massachusetts. I brought home a jar of 6 or 8 to show my parents. They pointed out that I didn't know what to feed them, so they went back the next day. Now they are listed as endangered. Horse Pond in Sudbury, MA had them frequently. I don't even know if the pond is still there. (Yes, I got yelled at regularly for muddy shoes and soaked pant legs) Horse Pond Road School was were I was grades 2-5. Frank.
Fairy Shrimp
Frankay, I am wondering if they are the same as are sold here for aquariums. They are called Fairy Shrimp also and are about a half inch long maximum and pretty clear to look at. Small stripes on the tailpiece at each joint of it. Pretty neat critters to watch.
