I know that many varieties only bloom one, maybe two years. If that is so, how do they keep getting more? And what does one do to make them bloom again? Is there a secret out there? Do they divide? Do they only produce more bulbs by seed?
Seems like a really stupid series of questions, but someone gets more somewhere, or they would not exist.

Tulips
Limey you should be OK.
A Tulip makes a new bulb every year beside the original which shrivels away. I read recently about planting them deeper than recommended. Try the species Tulips for better results.
Mark
....blonde moment going on here....lol
What does species mean in a bulb description?
TY,
SB
Are you blond?
Species means as it is found in the wild ie not tampered with by man to make the 100s of cultivars there are today. This goes for all plants found in the garden except Alpine plants. Well, I'm sure there are a few cultivars but they are only variations on a theme.
Why yes I am turning sorta blonde...hehe
.
TY for the enlightenment =)
here are species Tulips http://www.rareplants.co.uk/tulipa/index.htm
So kind of an heirloom?

Mark,
...Heirloom seeds ,Vegetable and flower seed types, usually protected, kept pure and passed down through a family, community or native tribes...like the Brandywine Tomato, an old German strain.
I grow these and they are excellent.(want some?)

....I get the idea that species are natural wild strain???

Scooter thanks for the offer but there is no room in my greenhouse for tomatoes.
Yes species are the wild strain which can usually be found in the country of origin but many are being lost due to man
