Hiya Brugs group,
I am looking for a "RED" brugsmaia for my bestfriend for Christmas...I have never heard of it..but I did see a picture of one some where...anybody got a clue?
It's not the "sanguinea" it's more like the "Angel's Trumpet type...if that helps...you can email me directly or reply here if you prefer..
Thanks for any help...
MsCritterkeeper
Red Brugsmania???
If what I see is correct (some cameras dont always take true to color pictures) Firebird by H Blin is pretty red. I dont know if anyone has this one or not, here in the states. Dont know if that helped or not, but at least you have one name.
Shelly
There is another one called SuperSpot, but it is also a Euro brug. Would be expensive to get ahold of and a lot of red tape involved. Other than the one Shelly mentioned and the sangs, I can't think of any that is red that is available in the US.
RED??? what rock have I been hiding under?---that it-----I cant stand it anymore-------someones got to go to Europe and do some collecting.....
Hey thanks all,
So how much red tape could it be???
Anybody ever done it before? email me with some info or provide me with a link pretty please???
Winter is coming an maybe it will make a nice project for me??? Expensive is well another thing...Are we talking more than $100 bucks???
Never done any importing before...what the heck ...
Blessings to ya,
MsCritterkeeper
Hey playsndirt...don't feel bad I didn't know about it either...LOL
here is a little info I was given. I will copy and paste from Tig on BGI... hope it helps! ummm LOTSA red tape! lol! I learned that! (right Brugie? lol! I am still hemmin and hawin over that one)sheeeesh! Im just too sensitive.
"you can't bring plants into the country from a trip (not brugs anyway) I called hoping that with a phyto and import license that Ludger could bring some to me. They said no, (very loudly:)
Plants have to come in through certain ports only. Seeds are easy to import if you have a seller, a phyto and an import license, but they still have to come in through certain ports. it's easier to get seeds through the mail from the way she talked, you could get hung up forever in customs."

I keep looking for more red brugs... sanguinea could also have (some) red on the corolla, the tube is yellow in most cases I think, but again what people call red, could be orange... just another I was thinking about.
I believe Monika is the only person to have firebird besides Ms. Blin, they are friends.
Ludger said Snowhermit's Mountain Magic was the closest to red he has ever seen, but i don't think that will be cut on for a while.
Ms Critterkeeper, red Brugmansias are not available because they do not exist, even in Europe!!! The exception is B. sanguinea.
The darkest is a deep Rose and only seen, when warm temperatures combined with high humidity exists during the development of the buds and opening of the flowers. It needs a spontanous mutation in the genes to achive red Brugmansias.
oooh! Thank you for that info Monika! I am ALWAYS learning stuff here! That is very interesting. :o)
Thanks so much everybody! I guess she is going to have to settle for something a lil "less" than a Red Brug for Christmas!
I guess the pic I saw must have been in my dreams or a retouched photograph?? LOL...Maybe it was Monika's Firebird and I just thought it was Red beacuse I didn't know any better???
Hiya Monika,
I am just a newbie to the group so forgive my ignorance...
You said:
"It needs a spontanous mutation in the genes to achive red Brugmansias."
So...does that mean that there will NEVER be a true "RED Brug"? because it's genetically impossible from the Brugs we have now?
Thanks again to all,
Ms Critterkeeper/LottieJean
Hallo LottieJean! It was probably Firebird you have seen.
Occasionly, Brugmansia hybrids like Firebird show really off when weather conditions suits them. This is when we make the photos but in my catalogue, I write that it is a deep Pink.
Brugmansias colors are White, Yellow or Pink. Through hybridizing, there are many shades of Yellow and Pink seen now. There might be a true Red someday!!!! Genes do mutate, its the law of evolution and breeders might speed it up.
lol hurry Monika!!! Make it speedier!! between you and snowhermit, there are huge chances of mutation!
I will try with hanging a bright red cloth in front of Rosa Zauber and Vulkanperle. They both have seed pods, deep pink pollinated with deep pink. Maybe both will know what I want LOL!
Farmers used to hang marked table cloth in front of their cows in order to get a calf with white/brown or white/black markings. I dont know if it helped but I will give it a try LOL!
Monika, If anyone can come up with a red Brug it will be you. :)
Im wishing you luck Monika! Snow! You are in there too! cmon now!

Hiya Monica and all,
So sorry for leaving you all hanging for the weekend...
I'm back from the Renaissance Festival and ready to learn about that Red Brug.
Thanks everybody for your input...
I have really learned a lot.
Monica you have a beautiful website and yes I think you might be right about that Red brug being "Redbird".
I only have the older varieties in white, pink and yellow and I love them so much! Veronica and I have made a nice trade for some newer varieties and I can't wait for them to bloom next season.
I'll keep studying and you all keep teaching me!
Blessings to all,
MsCritterkeeper/LottieJean
