Letting brug go dormant?

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

How does one do that after the brug is brought in? I put them either in the south facing basement window or the north window on the ground floor. If I with hold the water, the leaves droop and fall off. I am now waiting for my first bloom ever! The plant was hauled outside as it reached 60 today. Will it bloom indoors if it must stay inside due to weather? I don't want to miss seeing a real bloom! (I have 2 buds, lost 3 of them pulling the plant in 2 weeks ago)

I am no expert on this as all of mine are in teh ground here, but I have seen them on here blooming in side hopefully a more experienced brug expert will come a long and answer you soon

All my brugs are inside already. The ones that weren't going to bloom this year are in the garage with minimum light and where it's cool. They are losing their leaves and going dormant. When it gets cooler in the crawl space of our home, I will put them in there for the winter and only water once in a while.

I have three that were close to blooming when I brought them in though, so they are in the house in a south facing bay window. They have been blooming for about 3 weeks now and doing fine. They are losing their leaves though, but still blooming. When they are done blooming, they will get to go out to the garage to go dormant, then into the crawl space to get their rest for the winter.

Don't know if this is the best way to do it, but it's worked for me so far.

Has anyone used dormant oil on brugs that are resting? am wondering....

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Won't they die without water after bringing them in? Last winter I brought them inside and watered them every other day when they demanded it by drooping their leaves. They stayed awake all winter! I kept them in a north window, but I have so many others to cram in, it would help if some would go dormant!

Mine are blooming in the kitchen even as we speak! LOL From all that I have read, if you have woody trunks on them, you can let them go dormant. Since I still have many that are very green, I will be growing them awhile longer under lights. I am afraid they won't recover otherwise. I'll have to have lights on for the cuttings so what's a few more?! Good luck!

Thanks Joan, that gives me hope! Michele, then do I just stop watering them if they have a woody stem? And they won't die?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Doris, you don't want them to go completely dry. Just very little water. I give a cup or two a couple times a month. I think keeping them in a cooler & darker area will also prompt them to go dormant. If you keep them in a warm area with lots of light they'll continue to grow and will need more water.

Mine drop all the leaves except at the very tip of the branches.

Arlene, do you mean an insect oil? I bet it would be okay for the woody brugs that are dormant. I haven't tried it tho. I always thought the big deal with the horticultural oils was that it would burn the leaves. If there aren't any leaves I bet it would n't hurt the woody stems.

I bought some Safers soap to spray on the brugs when they come all the way in the house. Will that be safe to use if some stems are still green? (they are still in garage attached to house)

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Safers soap is good. I've never had any trouble with it harming anything.
