Real name

Hi there, haven't posted in this one before. But, I have grown some plants from seed this summer, and one has actually flowered too, I'm soooo.... impressed.
i've bought it in to my sunlounge now as it's getting colder out there .
My problem is ,it was sent to me as Brugmansia gold.I assumed that it would be a yellow one.The buds have a definate hint of lemon to them, and the flowers too, thye're not white white,(if you get my meaning)
the perfume in the evening is a sharp lemon scent, fantastic.
Would gold be it's proper name?or is that just what someone called it because of it's colour?

It doesn't look too good at the mo as something has made holes in the leaves, capsid bugs perhaps? And the lower leaves fell off too, just went yellow ,and dropped, but then maybe that happens?

Brugs will not grow true from seeds. That's why the seeds from a gold have produced a plant with white flowers. It looks like Brugmansia x insignis hybrid to me but there's no way to tell what the parents could have been.

The dropping of leaves is normal when you bring the plant in. It's reacting to the reduced light level and the temperature change. Reduce the watering and fertilizing while you have it inside. This time of year brugs go dormant and need a rest period.

All pest seem to love brugs and will munch the leaves. Spidermites can be a real probelm indoors so keep your an eye out for any webing or stippling in the leaves.

Hiya Sueone,
That looks just like my original "white", I've had it about 15 years...so it's an oldie.LOL
Mine is very hardy,Floriferous, and smells heavenly.
Seems like there might be a tag on it ..I'll check it out & let ya know.

Thanks Mscritterkeeper,

The other brugs that I've smelt before have had a sweet scent, this has a definate tang to it,like a lemon verbena.
What do you do with yours over the winter? Do the leaves all fall off, and it go dormant, should you keep watering it a lot? a little?
Never having got this far with one before, its a mystery to me.

Since you grew it from seed, it won't be the same plant as the one Mscritterkeeper is talking about. This would be a totally new plant. The problem with growing from seed is that there are so many that look alike. After you have grown a lot of them you will see that sometimes you just have to toss some of them because they are all looking similar or even alike. I love to grow from seed because it is so much fun waiting to see if the seed will produce something totally unlike anything I've seen before. Many brug growers will grow out hundreds of seeds and maybe not keep any of the plants after they have bloomed. Once in a while luck hits and there is a beauty beyond words. Your brug is pretty, they all are, but it is rather common looking. It is special nonetheless, because you grew it. I kept my first seedling for a couple of years, but now I'm learning that I can't keep everything and I still keep too much. I hope you will grow more seeds and maybe you will come up with one that is really special and that the world would love to grow. I'm certainly not trying to put your down because your seedling is white and ordinary. In fact, you have done very well to grow one and get it to bloom. Keep up the good work.

If I save seeds from this one, and grow them on, would the seedlings be different again, or is the white the sort of base line...if you get my meaning, do they revert back to the plain white.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

There always seem to be lots of white seedlings, white is dominate, but it could depend on what you cross it with. You would have better luck if you started with a darker pink or yellow brug and crossed them with color, but you just never know with seeds. That is why so many people have others help them grow out the many seeds that are in a pod. The ones you might not grow because of not having space, might be the one that would set the world on fire. I had several seeds this year that bloomed with color. Probably more than or equal to the number of whites. Butterfly, Rosamond, Pink Beauty and L'Amour seem to give more color. I had one seedling that was Tropical Sunset X Butterfly if I remember right, that came out a nice yellow with nice tendrils. Generally I don't put pink to yellow. Only had three or four yellow seedlings bloom, most were pink that had color. I have to say that I'll grow three or four of them again next year, but most will not be kept, even ones with color. Now, do I have you totally confused? LOL!!

WOW Brugie..I'm impressed and confused....where could I find out "whom to cross to who?" LOL
It is a fascinating topic...
I live in deep south Tx on the coast and the few I have stay green almost all year...they bloom almost all year too..but not like they do in the early spring & fall. As far as I know the Brugs I have are very old...15 years or so...probable origninal plain jane varieties...but they are very hardy and great bloomers. The one I have trouble with is a small variegated one...it has never bloomed in 3 years!!
Any suggestions?
Thanks again,

Gee Brugie, do you have a picture of Tropical Sunset X Butterfly? It sounds so pretty.

MsCritterkepper, that is the big question! I guess it depends what your goal is in the end. What shape, color, tendrils size etc. you want in your brug to be. Each eye forms its own beauty. I would think to get a brug you have imagined it would take a few years of crossing and building each year on the cross until you get the characteristics you want.

Unfortunately, the backgrounds of some brugs are not available. It seems alot of hybridizers do not want to share what their special cross was. This makes it hard for those of us who have no clue. If you cross 2 with a lot of white or even a little white in their background, the chances are high you will get white seedlings.

Some of us are crossing the darker pinks to get even darker pinks. Whether it happens or not is another question. LOL. But some of us are keeping track of our hybrids and learning which crosses throw the most whites. We also are putting the darker pinks on doubles hoping to get a double pink. It must not be so easy or we all would have it by now. I am even doing some yellow crosses! LOL

I assume it takes several generations to get anywhere close to where you want to go. And that is with luck every year in what you pick. But it is a fun hobby and adds some excitement to our lives!

Kell, I will go out and take a picture. It isn't all that special, but I think I'm going to keep a couple of cuttings and see what I can do with it next year.

Thanks Brugie. So is it 2 toned on the front? The petal valleys look darker. It would be great if you could get a pink with the same color pattern as Tropical Sunset which rates high on my love list. Very nice shape.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Sorry for hijacking your thread Sue. I'll answer Kell and then let you get back to business. Kell it is hard to say what the true color is at this time of the year. We were near freezing last night so it could be darker in the heat, who knows.

Weymouth, Dorset, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

No probs Brugie, its all interesting to learn, perhaps I ought to be looking for a coloured one to cross it with, then find room for the ,what sounds like, hundreds of seedlings. :-)_

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sounds like a plan! And if you know if pink or yellow or peach or orange is in the whites's background, you can cross with a strong one of that color and see if you can bring out the recessive color. You can also pick a mate for shape and get some interesting different whites. Or find a great shape colored brug and go for both! LOL
