I can tell my arborea has earth worms in the pot. I can see the castings are coming out the holes in the botttom. What should I do about it?
Ignore them?
Repot with fresh soil?
Try to drown them out?
Anyone have suggestions?
Earth worms in my pots...
Why would worms be a problem? I am asuming they are earthworms. All of my potted plants have earthworms and froggies! lol. I worked too hard to get worms back into what is laughingly called soil around here. Let the wormies live! Don't they aerate the soil and leave those nice casting that are very pricy fertilizer?
I'd say they are a plus, does it cause a problem in your GH?
But these are potted and in the house. I'm afraid they'll reproduce rapidly in the warm house all winter .... and my poor brug won't have any soil left in the pot.
I have never had such a thing happen in all the years I have raised potted plants.
It's because the pot was sunk in the ground while outside. The worms get in through the holes in the pot.
I had trouble with a passion flower one year after bringing it inside. When I decided to get rid of it and dump the pot.... There was a massive amount of earthworms in the soil. In fact, the soil was riddled with them. I don't think it's a good idea to let them stay.
Earth worms don't eat dirt, only the organic material that is mixed in to the pottingsoil. Once that is consumed I would imagine they die, unless you bury some lettuce or something in the pot for them to munch on.
I don't think you will have a problem.
I dont see a problem either. You may bring the worms back in the garden.
I've always heard that if you have earthworms in your soil then you have very good soil. I leave them in aything that they are in and if I disturb some while digging in the garden I always try not to kill them but just move them out of the way.
They are a good source of aerification for your soil, in other words they keep your soil churned up and supplied with fresh air. These are just things that I have heard so if anyone knows otherwise please feel free to correct me as i'm by far no expert on the subject!
If I happen to dig into them while playing in the dirt, I toss them into a potted plant nearby. I'm sure most of my pots will have worms in them for winter time and I'm hoping they will multiply while they are in the house.
Last year I dug up my Elephant Ears and kept the soil around the roots. Stored them in plastic bags on the heated porch. When it came time to plant up for spring, I sprayed the dirt off and there were earthworms in the dirt. They must of been dormant. I just misted water on the roots every couple of months.
