Brug seed question

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

I ordered some Brug seeds this weekend and when I checked the seed information it said that the plants won't bloom for two years. It also said that even if you buy seeds that are suppose to be yellow, orange, red, etc., you may only get white flowers. I'm wondering if I wasted my money.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

butterflygal I am not an expert by no means but i grew seeds this year that had blooms so from my own experience this isn't true the part about getting white ones is true but you can also get some colored ones too you will just have to grow them out in pots and cull what you don't want, you know i noticed you live in grady, you don't live to far from me would you be interested in some adult plants you can come get them they are blooming now, pink ones I am going to dig them up before winter so let me know

A friendship is born! LOL How nice.

Do you know who the parents are of your seeds Butterflygal? Sometimes you can get a better idea from that. White is the dominant color of new bruglings. There is always white in every background it seems. LOL. But you can luck out also. That is the thrill of growing from seeds, you never know until it opens and even then it can change with subsequent flushes.

If you plant your brugling early enough and take good care of it, you should be able to get blooms the first summer. But start the seed by February I would say to give your self the best chance for early blooms!

All the seeds are suppose to be from Brazil. Ordered from "Seedman", a link on Brugmansia Growers International, so hope they are a reliable source.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have never heard of the Seedman. If they are fresh I am sure they will be fine. Did you peel the outer cork and make sure there is a seed in there? I wonder if they are from Brazil if they are Sanguinea seeds. They tend to be orange-red in color and will not grow well if at all where you live. Too hot and muggy.

Ebay has lots of seeds for sale. And you can get some fantastic hybrids. Cala's Tropicals right here on Dave's may have some great hybrid seeds for sale also. Cala usually does though I have not looked in awhile.

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

Here is the link http://www.seedman.com/datura.htm I was told I should get the seeds tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest. I will check out Cala's site, the problem is I always want everything I see.

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

butterflygal i sent you some e-mails let me know if you got them

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

which seeds did you buy? He seems to think the terms brugmansia and datura are interchangeable. I see Frosty has made it to Brazil..... LOL!

From what I saw, you will probably get none of the fancy new brug seedlings from those offered. He seems to have lots of nice daturas though. I wonder how he can offer seeds from the white and pink brug that are the same as the picture he shows? I would have loved to see more pics esp of the Indian one.

If you want more excitement check out Cala and you can always email her if her store doesn't have what you want. She often offers seeds of L'Amour, Butterfly, Rosamond etc crosses and I bet she even has some RK crosses if not now, soon!

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

Oh those seem kinda high for common brug seeds and to think I through out 500 Lefluer datura seeds and i could have gotten 2.50 x 50 okay figuring here 125.00 bucks oh my that would by a lot of new brugs let me go dig in the trash can outside......

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

LOL Amanda! hope the trash has not been pick up yet. u too funny. thanks for the laugh. i sure could use it. LOL.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Can just see it......bottom/legs sticking out of the can. Sure hope you can find them!

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

Now I'm worried!! Ok, I ordered: Brugmansia aurea, Red Tree Brugmansia, Double Purple Datura, Brazilian Treasure and Golden Queen. Hope they at least grow! I visited Cala's site and ....I want 'em all :)

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Seedman is from Miss.US,I have tried to order Dat seeds there.

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

Did you get your seeds RD?

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

butterflygal, be careful, VERY CAREFUL!! Brugs are terribly addictive. Once you see one, you want them all; once you grow one there's no hope. You're hooked and think about them all the time and search the web looking, ordering, begging.

Seriously, the members of DG are the greatest and I just know that before long your house will be over-running and next summer your yard will be full of beautiful brugs. I have only been a member for about a year and I have about 30 that I'll try to keep alive over the winter.

Linda

Good luck, and boy are you in for some fun.

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

I'm already addicted and don't even have one yet ... lol
I was afraid to plant too many new thing this year. Last year cows (wild, according to my neighbor) got in my yard and ate & ruined almost everything in my gardens! We never could catch 'em at it though. I planted iris all over my yard, was told they deter both cows and deer. They haven't been back, but ... I suspect someone is having steak ... lol

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

I never got a response from them. You are on the best spot to get plants and seeds,I found that out,DG Rules!

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

I now know that I must ask before I leap sorta speak ;) Amanda is going to share some cuttings with me and I ordered some from Cala ... and now garden beds to till :)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Butterflygal, they should do fine except the maybe the sang seeds.

Red Tree Brugmansia -- this is the sanguinea. It probably willnot grow well where you live. It likes it cooler.

Double Purple Datura, Golden Queen. These both will be beautiful datura not brugs.

Brazilian Treasure looks like a Frosty to me.

and brugmanisa aurea looks pretty.

We all want everything on Cala's site! LOL

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

well .... I was hoping for a no-response from "Seedman" like RD got. But alas, the money came outta the bank today, just my luck. I hope that at least I'll get the seeds. I'll just have to baby the ones that won't like my climate. And I have to read, read, and more reading on brugs :) I had to email Cala, couldn't remember which of the plants I ordered. I ordered 3 or 4 of her new seed types ... gorgeous ... I just can't wait!!

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

The seeds I received today

Hard to tell Butterflygal, but those Golden Queen seeds look like they might be daturas. If they don't have the corky seed coat they're dats.

Milton, FL(Zone 8a)

Butterflygal,if you are a member of BGI you can get free seed from the seed bank. These are good seed from crosses done by BGI members.Membership is inexpensive and probably less than you paid for the seed from Seedman.Seed from the BGI bank are more likely to give you some good colors.

Ewing, KY(Zone 6a)

Butterflygal you don't have any kind of guarantee on any cross what it will come out as. That's the fun part of it growing out a cross. Its a complete surprise. You could end up with a white or something beautiful. I am sure any of the crosses you get from anybody in this forum or Cala's Tropical you will have a good chance at something great as you can see from all the great seedlings people have been posting.

Grady, AL(Zone 8a)

I couldn't believe this posted. I tried for so long I gave up :P
I used the "dino" method on a few of them tonite. I too noticed that the "Golden Queen" was smaller/different and looked more like the datura ones. Hopefully they will be pretty anyway even if they aren't true hybrids. I've visited the BGI site, lots of information. Think I will join. Thanks everyone for all the appreciated imput :)
