I was wondering if there are any Brug and Datura pros that could give me any tips? This is my first year with two Brugs and one black currant swirl datura. The datura has been blooming like mad, but the brugs, are just growing tall and I see no sign of blooms.
Also I was wondering...
I have heard that in my zone, 7b, that I could leave them and they'll be perennials????? I could not hope that is true, right? I have seed pods all over the place for the datura, but I am worried I need to start some cuttings for next year of the brugs. I got them as cuttings from someone through the mail and they are supposed to be apricot. I did not get a species name, but I thought I could classify it myself once it blooms......
:D anyone?
OK, I just did a little reading, I am going to dig up those brugs, prune and store em. Has anyone read that book Brugmansia and Datura
Angel's Trumpets and Thorn Apples
by Ulrike and Hans-Georg Preissel
Looks like a good one and obviously I need some education.

New to Brugs and Daturas
Welcome to the DG and the Brugs & Friends forum Jenks! i am not an expert, am a newbie myself when it comes to growing both brugs and datura. a newbie who's adventurous enough in growing and experimenting on plants that will grow in my area. in my experiments and testing, i love to share info on the results of such experiments. am sure someone will come along and give u some good advice. hopefully someone from ur same zone can share with u their own growing experiences.
Hi Jenks!! (lol)
I'm in zone 7b and have left quite a few out and they came back. IF they were planted in spring or early summer, they have to be established in ground. I wouldn't leave any of the harder to come by brugs outside, though.
I'm bringing mine into the greenhouse, I grow them in pots in the ground now. You can cut them back and bring cuttings in if you like, if treated right they will bloom for you next summer/fall.
did you see we're having a GA roundup/plant swap the 18th in Jackson? would love to meet you there.

Thanks MaVie!
Oh wow, I joined back up just in time! I'm going to have to see if I can make it! Thanks tiG! Is there any fishin nearby where I can send my husband? lol
Sure wish I had RU to go to. Doesn't someone want to have in San Antonio? ha ha
yes, some of the hubbies are going fishing right there!!! will get viola to email you the particulars.
Thank you tiG!
So, if you are bringing them into the greenhouse, they don't need a dormancy period? I have an unheated greenhouse.......actually, it wouldn't be real hard to move right up next to the house and run some heat into -I ususally put lights up in it to keep the chill out....hmmmmmm do you still prune em back by 1/3 the season's growth? I read that somewhere......
I'm putting a shade cloth over for the winter. I will prune them back to about 6 nodes above the Y, depending on the shape.
Jenks, I just got the Brugmansia nd Datura book from the library and it is great. I will now have to acquire one of my own. It has wonderful pictures, and great information. I can get it online for around 17.00 Canadian$, so it looks like a good price.
THANKS!!
Glenda
Yes, I'd trim all but the growth point, and be sure to keep it in a shady area until it comes out of it. It will take some time, but I'm sure it will be okay. I had a rooted brug mailed to me bare root and after 5 days it perked up and was just fine.
Thank you I am so relieved! On my way out the door now to trim it
I have also found they will perk up quicker if you water with warm water but spritz the leaves with cooler water. Don't keep them soaked by any means, just mist occasionally.
