Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone can give me a tip as to the best way to start my Datura from seeds I got from Happenstance. I'm new but I wanted to do this right, anyone??
Datura help
Annabelle....
I've never started the tatula from seed. (Actually Happenstance is sending me seeds for them.) But I have started the Black Currant Swirl and they are very simple. I just poke a seed in the dirt. And water!!! Maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch in and pat a little dirt on top of it. They love sun, and plenty of water when they get going! The one thing that I can tell you is that you need to be patient. Some of them will germinate in a few days and others may take 6 weeks. Strange, but true!
Annabelle, I highly recommend this link --> http://davesgarden.com/t/382293/
I started my Black Currant Swirl this past spring from seeds I had gathered the previous year. Brinda is so right about the patience game of these seeds! That's why I really like the "Deno" method. Using this method you can see root activity and know if the seed is actually viable rather than waiting a month or more for something to pop-up from the dirt. Because of these being so lazy in starting, I purchased a heat pad just for them this year!
Good luck ☺
Thank you Brinda...Im trying just poking them in the some dirt and just watering....
also trying soaking them 24 hours in warm water then planting them in the soil, and not really clear on the heating pad thingy.
Morph Do I put the seeds inside a papertowel thats wet then place in a ziploc baggie then put it on top of a heating pad...?? Like that? I may have to try this method too...tryin all of em' to see which is most effective for me lol
Love it!!! Thank you guys for trying to help me
Yep, just put the seeds in the moistend paper towel (I nicked mine first). Then, either keep them at a nice warm temperature for germinating. I wouldn't put them directly on the heat pad, but perhaps on a cookie cooling rack that's about it?
Also, just to be sure, these did get chilled already, right? I mean, if they were harvested this year, they need to think it's next year by having been put in the fridge for several weeks or more to simulate winter.
I wouldn't even plant them until about February. They might get too big in the house or greenhouse. Datura are considered an annual and so generally are started in spring. JMHO.
Thanks Morph and Brugie. I think Im going to wait till spring...I'd rather do that than lose any of them at this point. You guys helped me alot. Thank you for your advice, I shall heed to it :-)
Good point, Brugie! I wasn't even thinking about the fact that they are annuals as I'm so caught up at the moment with what to do with some brugs :)
I understand totally Morph....I've done nothing but clip and snip on my brugs lately. So much my hands are getting sore.
Brugie, I think Brinda & I are going to be the happy recipients of of your clip & snip activities at the So Cal RU! Arlene & Donna have been so wonderful babysitting me through my first RU! I am so, so excited. I promise to guard your brugs with my life & post all their baby pictures.
Thanks again,
Bambi
Oh, yes, would love to see pictures!!!!
I'm glad that you will be able to get some good from my clipping and snipping. Arlene did all the work though. Hope you all have a great time.
Oh, I presumed you were going in person to deliver these, Brugie... What's the closest RU to you? Have y'all had one anywhere near you?
Oh Brugie!!! I wish so much that I could be there with Bambi at the RU! That would be great! I got lucky that Bambi is such a good friend and is going and will send them this way! Arlene is such a very nice person and you are so generous! I think that DG is such a wonderful place, with such kind and generous people. I'm so thankful that I have the opportunity to learn for everyone here! Thanks Bambi for sending me here! Thanks to all of you!!!
Morph, we had two here at my house this year. It was a blast and so much fun meeting everyone and trading plants. The second RU was much more relaxed. Just a good old gab fest. Can't wait for next year to roll around so we can all get together again.
That's awesome! It sounds like your two gatherings were like a mixture of ours in Kentucky. Lots of "goings on" when we all gathered at the main area, but more relaxed out at the camp sites :)
