tulip bulb protection

Cuyahoga Falls, OH(Zone 5a)

Does anyone know where I can buy wire baskets to protect my tulip bulbs ? I have lots of squirrels and chipmunks in my yard. Also, I want to plant garlic, but I just found out that gophers eat garlic. Guess what - I have gophers too. Will the baskets protect the garlic ? Thanks.

have you tried chicken wire or Twiweld as a cheaper option. Or maybe an air rifle

Honey girl Years ago the city Of Bellingham used coffee cans pinched full of holes. Then dug them up each spring after flowering and planted annuals in the holes made removing the cans.

Worked for them the tulips bloomed just fine.

They did this to protect from moles and mice. Don't know about squirrels ,chipmunks, or gophers.

Think the can woud be to confining for the garlick though.

What could be cheaper than a coffee can? Ernie

The easiest is hardware cloth. I plant the tulips about 6 inches deep and then once they are barely covered, I put down 1/2' hardware cloth then more dirt and then at about 2" below the surface of the soil, I put in some tiny daffodil bulblets. They keep the squirrels away and the tulips can still come up mong the hardware cloth and the daffodils bulblets.

Someone told me that moth balls does the trick, they don't like the smell. Just plant one with each tulip bulb. I plan to try it this year.
