By the way, these are all my DH's (Chuck)plants, this year I've been taking care of them but he gives the orders. There are lots more but they got pretty banged up by Isabelle

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Oh, they are just too gorgeous, I planted more than 55 this year and they all came up, but not much in the way of blooms due to all the wet weather. I do have one Peppermint Dahlia that I posted a pic of as the plant reached about 9' or better and I have one blossom inside, due to the frost we got and 2 blooms that may open if the weather holds out.
Yours are just spectacular especially #8, 7,6, 5 and so on! Be sure you get them out of the ground int time!

9 foot tall?

What were you feeding that sucker?

Mount Angel, OR(Zone 8a)

CC, your first one looks like one I have called Maarn. It is just gorgeous. Ours are still blooming gloriously. Our catalog is still in the printing process. I saw a computer copy today of what our daughter is doing and it is gorgeous.

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

Believe it or not, I haven't fed it anything and really didn't think it would ever bloom. I looked yesterday when I got home and another blossom is beginning to open.

Here is the link to the bloom I picked and another of Steve 6' standing with the stalk!

3 questions...

Best way to stake the dinner plates?

How long do the flowers stay good once cut?

Best way to condition the cut flowers?

gracias :)

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I used tall garden stakes and some velcro to stake mine eco. As far as cutting, I find they are one of the longest lasting flowers you can have in an arrangement and I just snip and put in filtered tap water.
Must say the one I have right now that is more than 9' tall, yes 9' I have tied with string and secured to my garage window and to an overhang as it is real heavy and could easily snap in a wind. But that one is quite unusual for dahlias.

Mableton, GA(Zone 7b)

Wow really? I cut mine and put them in tap water and they last 1 day and then wilt. Of course these are ones that have snapped from the weight of the heads and I cut them later when I notice they are hanging down. Maybe they are already on their way out. I don't have enough to cut for fun. I had some that got that tall this year too. They were supposed to be 5' tall pompoms called Sunny Boy. Well they just kept going up and up and the flowers(after the first round of blooms) went from pompom to composite to single to decorative and everything in between. The only thing I didn't get was cactus. I have no idea what they are but I don't want them anymore. I hope someone else on Dave's wants some potentially super tall very variable flowered yellow/burnt orange ones! lol

Laurel, DE(Zone 7a)

I have some yellow cactus ones and they are quite pretty. Don't give up yet. Think they got so tall due to the rain and humidity! Mine are just beginning to bloom in October!

I think next year if they look like they are going to get that tall, I'll just lopp them off so they bush out.
