I planted dahlias from seed and dug up the tubers. Can these be treated like regular dahlias that are purchased as tubers? That is, can they be stored over winter?
dahlias
According to the woman at our local nursery, yes. Store them the same as the big tubers. Gonna try this myself with the little guys I bought. Most treat the dwarf Unwins as annuals to spare themselves the bother, but I like some of the colors I got and want to save them for next year.
Thanks.
I tried to do this last year, but didn't have any luck. I thought it would be really smart to store them in peat in styrofoam coolers in the garage, but I guess it must have gotten too cold for them. Maybe I will try them in the coolest part of the basement this year. Do you pack them in anything?
This will be the first year I try this. All she said was "Don't let the tubers freeze or dry out too much." Great indepth advice or what? LOL! But there's a great hyperlink in the replies to JoanJ's post "How do you store your bulbs and tubers?" in the bulbs forum. With small tubers, I think our biggest worry is that they might dry out quicker than the big ones. Since I don't have many, I'm gonna try damp peat in a couple of shoe boxes and put a note on my calendar to check them every week or so until I get a feel for how fast the peat dries out. According to that link, the fridge would be too cold for them. The great experiment begins, giggle...
