I've received a few dead hardwood stick cuttings and have been unsuccessful in getting them to root. Do they take a special method, or is it a lost cause? They look just like hard dead sticks with nothing green about them.
Dead Stick Cuttings and How to Root
Thats what i got my first time and cala told me to put them in about 1inch of warm water and keep them in the dark-I put them under my bed on a heat register-i never thought they would grow-He is now over 4ft tall and loaded with budz! make sure the water doesnt dry up!
I thought i had gotten taken when i pulled out those dried up sticks! ;)
Thanks to you and Susie. I'll try that and see. I should have tried a little harder with the first ones I received like that. I eventually just threw them away, because I thought that after 5 or 6 weeks they must be dead.
I am glad I have not sent you my cuttings yet! LOL
Sylvia, those are just hardwood cuttings. I've had a few that took some time to root, but they will. I personally like the cuttings that are about as big around as a nickel and have a little bark on them. They root the best for me, but I know people that prefer to have the greenwood cuttings and those I just can't root at this time of the year. In the summer, no problem. Be patient....I'll bet they will surprise you.
Sometimes I have had a dead brug cutting in the a pot and then a side shoot comes up from the dead. The main piece is dead..but it had live roots! Always a nice surprise and makes me hapy I am such a lazy gardener and do not clean up my failures so fast.
I wish that I hadn't, but the nice Seller sent me some replacements, so it wasn't a total loss. I'll be a little more patient this time and see what happens. You can tell I'm new to growing them from cuttings.
Well, Kell, does that mean I can practice on the cuttings you are sending me. LOL
I am not planning on sending you any dead ones............. but you never know!
Sylvia, hard wood cuttings aren't dead, they have a lot of life in them:) good luck!!
They probably have more life in them than I do this morning. We stayed up late last night to watch Texas Tech absolutely maul our Texas A&M football team. So much for our new coach. lol
lol!!!
Sylvia, I just looked at my notes from last year. Most of my cuttings rooted in two or three weeks, but a few took more than a month. A few took less than one week! I had them in water under fluorescent lights.
I need to get a grow light, so I can bring the cuttings in before it gets cold. I'll have to hide them from my DH though. He gets mad just because I have them on the patio. He would really explode with them in the house. LOL
That's about the only thing he really ever complains about is the mess I make with the plants. LOL Yeah, right.
