Daffodils, other spring bulbs in whiskey barrel - zone 5?

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

I have a huge surplus of daffodils (more on that later) and was thinking about getting two half whiskey barrels and do a version of the bulb layering (like Mark suggested with window boxes). Cold Zone 5, would this be too unprotected for:

Daffodils
Muscari
Iris reticulata
Crocus

sbarr... I have no clue but it will be wonderful if they will survive. I think all those bulbs need a chilling period to bloom.

I suppose if those bulbs are not hardy in your zone in a pot, you could still plant them that way and store in a garage. Bring out in spring? Have you done a web search for cold-hardiness of those bulbs in large pots?

Darus - no, I sure haven't - just the zone hardiness and this seemed like a good place to start - amazing what anecdotes DG folks have.

I know they are very cold hardy (reason for picking them) - down to 4a for the jonquils, even 3 for the crocus. The iris are 5a, but they're planted so close to the surface in the ground, an inch down or so, that they must freeze in the ground also.

The thought of a half whiskey barrel with dirt and bulbs seems too heavy to move.

Hopefully another cold zone victim has some input. We almost moved to the Raleigh area a couple of years ago, but I received an excellent job offer up here, so we stayed. In time, we'll probably move to that area, where spring actually starts in March!

they will be fine but make sure you have a 2 inch layer of gravel at the botton for drainage.
