Prepared for the freeze...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I hauled a bunch of my brugs into the garage yesterday. Just couldn't let all of them go with the freeze. I couldn't get Pink Beauty in because she was way too big, so she gets a blanket tonight. It was a lot of work getting them in here, but they had too many buds to not see them bloom, some for the first time.

The buds on Creamsickle were too close to opening to let them freeze off.

Doing the same here, although ones in the ground are loaded, it is out of my hands! Just pray it will not get that cold, but we had frost on the rooftops today, it is so wet and lot of dew on everything every night, grea for a big freeze. Grr... Can't win.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Break my heart. All those buds. What a greqat job you do for your love of your plants Brugie! Amazing!

Brugvalley, Germany(Zone 7b)

Shirley, you did a good yob:-) Wish you a better summer in 04

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Too soon.

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

I have blankets over my two brug"trees" as they are too big to move inside. I hope they make it , but I took some cuttings just in case. We have a freeze warning out and it is wayyy tooo early for this cold! LOU

Hattiesburg, MS(Zone 8a)

It breaks my heart to hear that you are going to have frost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So sorry for you.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I just got all of my plants but one dug and inside..some in the garage and many in the basement..at least they are safe from the frost...I had to lose all but a few buds for now.Had to trim many..but Inca Sun has about 200 buds ready to open in the basement..look out sinuses...:-)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I have tons of plants still outside, most are seedlings full of buds. Oh well....there is always next year. Wish I could smell those blooms when they open Kyle. Maybe some of mine will open and give me that fragrance that I've missed so much this summer. I'm glad you were able to get your plants inside. I have cuttings of everything for next year, even some of the seedlings that haven't bloomed yet. I just hope the weatherman was a couple of degrees off, in my favor.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 6b)

I'm sorry that the cold is starting so soon for y'all, but I'm really glad that you will get to see at least some of your flowers. It really sucks to lose them all this early.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I was so looking forward to seeing my first blooms and now I managed to knock off all but 2 while I was dragging the plant in! Will they bloom indoors, I hope?

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

I've got Maya inside by the south window in my Living Room. She is loaded with buds, lost a few, hoping she will quit that. Of course Snowbank is in too. And some cuttings. With all the Elephant Ears I had to bring in, the house is kinda full.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Debby and Doris, isn't it just so much fun having to haul plants around up here in the cold of the Midwest? I want to move south. I'm so tired of this. Doris, you may lose a few buds but I think most of them will go ahead and bloom if they already have some size to them. If you could have seen me moving my White Pearl X Big today, you would have died laughing. It is lucky to have a top left on it at all, let alone the buds.

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Brugie: I wanted to add that you did alot of work yesturday girl. I'm with you I want to move south. GRC said to come to Georgia. Oh well, another winter here. We plant them out in the spring, baby them and then bring them back in for the winter. My Dr. Suess blooms would not open because of the cold. Today, I cut one stem off and the one bud is opening a little. I just want to see the darn bloom. We need another month for good brug blooms. Keep your fingers crossed for a better year next year.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

The buds are 2-3 inches long. Do they prefer a south or north window? Brugie, I know! Weather! Two of the pots, roots had grown down through the hole in the bottom of the pot. Here the stupid pots are so big and heavy and I'm pulling like mad to get those roots to let go!! Neighbors were probably snickering behind their curtains!

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Kyle,When it opens,go down and wave a 2 gallon jug around, close it,send it to me SASE,I gotta smell that!

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

That paints a funny picture.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Doris, I took a spade with me, tipped the pots over, and chopped away those roots. All of mine had rooted down. I like that because it helps some to keep them from blowing over in high winds. Well, this year it didn't help much, they just went over and twisted. The roots didn't even break. You shouldn't be doing all of that work. Not good for what ails you. As for them blooming, just hold your breath and give them as much light as you can. Don't overwater. Good luck!!

Deb, I'm tired and sore tonight. Have bruises on my arms from fighting the big brugs. Mist that stem you cut off. They look good for a couple of days and then start wilting. I think misting will help them stand up longer. I've brought several in the house just to have the fragrance around for a while.

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

Djm: They prefer a south window, esp. if in bud. They need all the light to finish flowering. Hoping mine will bloom.

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Thanks Debby, then I shall have to lug them downstairs in the basement where the south windows are! It only went down to 32 last night, but I didn't see any frost! It is supposed to go up to 50 or so. This seems awfully early to have to do this. I've got nursery plants I bought in the summerand they never got planted, so in they come too!

Pittsburgh, PA(Zone 6a)

I'll be digging this evening also. That hot shower is gonna feel good!! :)

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Brugie, I really hope that you get to see some of those buds open. I can just imagine how it would be to have to wait another year when they are so close to opening.

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Brugie, I bet that at least your Creamsicle will bloom for you!! Kell sent me some about this time last year, and they had buds that opened inside, so don't lose the faith!!

"eyes"

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

The brugs in the garage are blooming, but they are pretty pale in color. Everything outside is gone. I mean black. A town about 40 miles east of us got down to 22 last night, but I haven't heard what our low was. It was killing, whatever it was. At least now I have no excuse to not clean off the garden and flower beds. I'm already thinking about what to plant next spring.

Jerrie, did you notice how nice the fragrance is on Creamsickle? I really like this one for smell.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Whew! I just dug up ALL of mine! I am beat. They are in anything I could find to hold them. I put them all in the garage except the 8 or so with buds! Those are coming in till they bloom. Now I am choking down dinner so I can go back out for the hibiscus, ears, vines, bananas...Why do I let you guys get me into these? LOL

Newberry, FL(Zone 8B)

oh my goodness, so sad to hear! I'm glad you got what you did in, Brugie and all...

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

I finished dragging the ones in the garage into the house but I'm going to have a problem getting an 8ft mandevilla complete with trellis through the doorway. It's got long swaying arms also that don't help the matter either!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

You can do it Doris! I now have an 8 foot Brug with buds in the dining room and a blooming blue sky vine growing up it. We won't talk about the rest of the plants in the house. LOL

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

You guys are worse than me. I have two garages full and cuttings all over the place, but no swaying arms or 8 ft. brugs in the house this year.

Landisburg, PA(Zone 6a)

I have this 7 ft plus brug that we used the "bag wagon" to haul around to the basement door and it took two of us to get to the basement...Then it was to tall to stand it up...Didn't want to cut any off the top as alot of the "Y" was there.....Don't know what to do with it..Laid it on the floor for now....Had soo much stuff to get in today as they are calling for 32 here tonight....Alot of my brugs were just getting ready to bloom for the first time...Maybe if it warms up will take a few of the smaller ones back out.....

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

LOL Brugie! At least I only have one that big and it is the seedling from you! This is all your fault you know. LOL The rest with buds were only about 4 feet tall thank goodness!! Do you want to talk about ears???

Milo, IA(Zone 5a)

The frost hit here too. Everything is black like brugies. Boy am I glad we got the brugs and yes, Michele the ears in from the co-ops. So my house is full of brugs and ears. I still have to dig the cannas, which didn't do a thing all summer, didn't even grow, but stayed alive. Also have to dig up the common elephant ears. Last year it was all I could do to dig up mama ear. Thought I was gonna break the spade, the handle did moan and groan. What we don't do for our plants. What an obsession.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Michele, after I got all the ears dug up that I was going to keep, I told Jim that I didn't care if I saw another ear until next year. They multiplied a lot, but I've found homes for all of them. Deb, my cannas bloomed some, but the only one that really put on a show was Princess Di. It was a beauty all summer.
