Is everyone getting ready for frost?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I feel so LUCKY, LUCKY, LUCKY!! I haven't had a frost yet :o) and I don't think it will get low enough here this week. They're saying high 30s but who knows. I got most of the brugs inside yesterday but I still have more to do today. I'm hoping the rain will stay away long enough to get the rest done.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Ready for frost?? You are joking right? LOL I still have about 200 brugs in the ground, all my ears, bananas and cannas are still in the ground. Ack. Since you are ahead of the game, wanna come help me? :) I'm having a sick week off work and getting nothing done! I bought a car and did two weeks of laundry. That's it.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Mine have been in the Gh or house since the temp dropped to 38 last week!
Im ahead of the game here Chele! You better get moving they are saying snow here and up to 2in in the U.P.

look west its like 29 there today!

DIG DIG DIG girlie Load up that new truck Chele! ;)

Poppy it snowed here yesterday mixed with rain-and suppose to be that way today-moving your way.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL-CUZ HERE IT COMES!!!!

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

PoppySue, I bet you feel relieved that all your brugs are in now. What a job you had to do carry them upstairs and downstairs. If it were me I probably would not even be out of bed yet this morning . . LOL

Badseed, you still have some days left while you are off work. It sounds like you alot to do and I would be completely overwhelmed if I had to do all that.

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I asked a question before and no one really answered it. It does not really fall under any of the questions anyone else asked. Most of my 'seedlings' are two-three feet tall. And many of them, I have say 12-18 of the same thing. Can I stick a bunch of them in a rubber maid tote as opposed to potting each one? Last year I tried putting one in a plastic bag and the top of the dirt grew a little mold. I took it off immediately. The brug was fine. Oh, and if I put several in a tub do I need to fill it with soil, or will they do all right with just their dirt ball? I plan to put them in the garage or basement and let them go dormant for a few months.
I'm jealous of you girls that are bustin' buns! We haven't had a frost here yet but I think tonight it is supposed to get to the lower 30's but in a few days our days are back up to the 70s again. Sigh! It was 36 this morning. Looking at 38 for tonight then we are back up in the 40-50s for the next ten days aside from two nights in the mid 30s again.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I took all of the special potted ones into the garage yesterday. Tonight will be our bad night. My thoughts earlier were to just take the cuttings and let them go, but with all those buds, I just had to see them bloom. Our frost warning is statewide, I believe. Hopefully the forecast is wrong.....like it was most of the summer when they said we could get rain.

Dripping Springs, TX

I can't believe some already brought up the "F" word. LOL If anybody needs to "send" their brugs away for vacation--Just let me know.
It's already in the 50's at night here in TX. Which is way too early.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

I can't believe that our weather man was correct every day this summer, when he predicted rain, we got it!

Everything under control here, inside, or undercover outside. Ones in the ground, full of buds and blooms, will just have to fare for themselves. We did all we could.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

I cannot believe that there is a possibility of frost for the next two nights here in Tennessee. Our average first frost date is Oct 30 - - so this is way too early for me.

I have a feeling that the easiest thing for me to do, is to drag as much as I can into the garage and let my car sit outside. I haven't taken anything out of the ground yet - - so I am going to have to cross my fingers that everything will be ok. As all of my brugs are covered in blooms and buds, I haven't had the heart to take cuttings. But I suppose I need do that tonight. AWWW I can hear the blooms screaming as I take cuttings! Nat

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

OOOHHHH so much work. I haven't even started. Hope I have a few more weeks.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Well,
..We're done for here, frost the last 2 nights and tonight predicted to be 30...and as I am in the country you know it will be colder than that here :~C

Toadsuck, TX(Zone 7a)

Sure is DR........and I been thinking, need to start potting and toting here too........who knows tomorrow could be 50 or could be 80!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have a terrible feeling this winter is going to be brutal!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Oh Kell, I wish you didn't have that feeling too. I can see us up to our you know what in snow this year. I hope none of it comes down as ice. At the very least, it is going to be a long winter with such an early start to it.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

According to the country old timers down here, the signs for a bad winter are here: lots of thick spider webs close to the ground and the wooly worms are almost black this year (all red indicates mild winter).

We usually have very mild winters here in Knoxville, but about every 10 years have a bad spell. And our last bad winter was 1993 - - so, we're due one.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Don't know if we can live through another winter like last year, snow on the ground from November until March, then rain all this summer, never got above 83 degrees! DH keeps weather records each month, for the whole year.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Sounds like total glum Gloria! We will have to get our silly fun emailing groups going again to keep you company in your misery!

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Nat, I had forgotten about the wolly worms and spider webs. This year is really strange. I've not seen one dark wooly worm and normally the spider webs are everyplace, even slappy me in the face, but none this year. I wonder what is going on...........the only wooly worms I saw were this summer and they were white.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

my da and I have the weekend planned to do my GH expansion and get the heater installed. The gas company is delivering the tank on monday. I've got my fingers crossed though that our temps are going to be normal this fall and not do something stupid like frost early! If all goes well over the weekend everything that needs to get done will and i'll be ready just in case.
I'm sure not ready to see the cold yet. It doesn't really bother me but all of my brugs are LOADED with buds. I went all summer with little or no bloom and now all of them are ready to explode with the exception of HG which will be the only lucky one to get dug and potted for wintering over in the GH.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

We are to be at 28 F tonight...say bye bye to all those brug buds...............I worked 12 hours on Tuesday trying to get things inside....many things will be thrown out.No room for it all.Special plants ..yes....boring things..NO!
:-)

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

28F here tonight..I spent a total of 21 hours over two days getting all 500 plants in. NO more after this year...gotta thin the herd next spring.

Knoxville, TN(Zone 7a)

Brugie, I suppose all your wooly worms and spiders are vacationing here in Tennessee 'cause we got 'em! On the more serious side, this has been the strangest year for weather and I don't think that it's over yet.

My first double brug bloomed yesterday and it is just killing me knowing that most likely the blooms will be brown in the morning. I did get everything other than my in-ground brugs inside for tonight. The garage isn't very pretty, but I can rearrange and trim everything later.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I can't believe that Tenn. is going to get that cold. This just shouldn't be happening. Hope your weatherman and ours is wrong. Good luck!!

Brundidge, AL(Zone 8b)

Well my hubby just came out of Montreal about an hour ago he says it BURRRR cold up there and they were talking like it might snow this week, hope it doesn't move on down the east coast P.S. I called him and told him to close the door behind him and Do Not bring that cold weather with him!! when he comes down the east coast, that Yall needed a few more weeks of warm weather !!!!

I guess I better hustle! The Brugs in containers will be moved to the garage, but the ones in the ground still need to be dug, as well as, the 'nana's & cannas. OOOH, my ackin' back!

According to the Farmers Almanac, which was "right on" about the 3+ft. of snow last winter, the excess rainfall this summer, is predicting a harder than "usual winter" for the Mid-Atlantic! GROAN!! I'm NOT ready for cold weather yet!!!

Mount Prospect, IL(Zone 5a)

Going down to 25F here they say. I've been dragging plants in all afternoon! My first brug with 5 buds, dropped two of them on the way into the house! Some I did leave some of the others in the garage and the family room floor is covered with plants! Some of them are outside huddled by the front door where its kind of protected. I had to break some of the fingers off the mandevillas, they were hanging onto things! So got them in water to see if they will root. Sheesh! I'll have to pick up some Safers soap tomorrow to spray the brugs and I spose everyone else I brought in. Here I thought I had all month to do these things at mmy leisure!

Byron, IL(Zone 4a)

Ok everyone Im getting nervous. My brugs are all getting naked....I showed a picture on an entry 9/26 so you can compare this to that one. Is this normal? They will end up bare? How will I know they are alive. Does the stalk change color? This is more worrysome than having babies...

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

They are okay. It is normal. They are going to rest for a while now and build up the energy to put out new growth and buds for next year. Mine always lose their leaves when I bring them in or change the amount of light they get. The tip growth will not fall off. Just don't overwater them. It is very easy for the roots to rot when it is cooler and they are too wet. Your brugs look just fine.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Seems like I brought in a bazillion plants. I still have some more to tend today. I'm hoping to coax some of the seedlings with buds into opening in the house. That way I'll know if I want to keep them or not. I told DH I'll chuck some of them out after I get to see the flowers ;) I can't stand the thought of tossing them if I don't know what the blooms will look like. Trouble is... I know I'll want to keep them all.

One of Calas seedlings opened last night. :o] Most of the buds fell off after it was dug but a couple hung on. This is Rosamond x LAmour.

Frost here in Mich = heavy too. We covered all brugs outside with sheets - looks like a bunch of trash live in this house!! Won't know for awhile if it was worth it. TV is saying the hardest frost we have had. I took a few cuttings in case, but only nine. What in the world was I thinking! If the frost was heavy enough, 30 + are gone. Makes me sick....

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I No Sarv! 30? If they didn't freeze too bad you may be able to cut the damage off and get more cuttings from the good wood that didn't freeze. That happened to one of mine last year that I had forgot to take in... the top was frost damaged but I was able to save the plant after cutting off all the damage.

Lima, OH(Zone 5a)

Beautiful R x L Sue, glad you got to see it bloom.

Coal Center, PA(Zone 6a)

Sue, that bloom is really pretty ((o:

I am just here a minute reading the DG 'news'.
I have been preparing for frost.
Our first killing should be tonight at 33F )o:
I will sure miss the cannas )o;

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

In that shot it looks alot like Rosamond. Hey Sue, my wish come true, a Rosamond that in dark PINK!!!!!! LOL

And if you are going to off any unseen bruglings, take cuttings!!!! Just think you may have the double purkle and not know it!!
