Our night temperatures will be in the low forties this week. Should I dig my Brugs up that are in the ground or will they be okay with the forty degree temps. They are full of buds and I hate to lose them. Thanks.
Taking Brugs in for winter.
40 is fine, it's when it gets close to 32 that you will hear me hollering, so listen close! LOL!
Thanks, Tig. I hope they bloom before it gets 32.
if you have EP, you might think about bringing her in soon, they don't like it real cool.
they say rain showers turning to snow thursday morning-to early-we havent had a frost yet! :(
ahelms, since my two are in pots, I'm watching the weather as they are calling for chance of frost Thursday. I will either bring them in or set them next to the house under the overhang. And tiG, what is EP?
It's Ecuador Pink. The versicolor brugs are more sensative to cold than most of the others. I left mine out too long last year and this is what happened...

This may be a dumb question, but here goes...The brugs that are growing in the garden, can I cut them back during the wintertime? I was thinking that if I surrounded them with bubble wrap, that it would help to insulate them. I would also cover the brug with a very large weighted pot. Will this work? Has anyone tried this? If so, what were your experiences? Am I totally "barking" up the wrong tree?
Ack! EP needs to come in sooner? I'll get her today. Any others? I'm not sure which are Versis.
These ones all had some cell blast last year....
Ecuador Pink, Milk 'n Honey, HG, Whiskers, Peaches & Cream, Versi-Peach, and Kyle's Pink.
Of course ... versi orange and versi alba would be sensative too.
Shirley, if you try to keep them out you had better take some cuttings just in case.
I had intended to start this afternoon, then it was such a gorgeous day, I just hated to move them. I will be out of town next week and just can't decide whether to move them in before I leave or take a chance. Three of them are set to bloom. Hope they can hold on until I get back home.
Thanks Sue, I thought I would ask. I know that it is best to bring them inside and/or in to a greenhouse. It's always a good idea to take some cuttings in case a Brug doesn't make it. You can always give the cuttings to friends or trade it away. Since you have a much colder winter than I do, I can certainly understand why you bring them in. However, after the 3ft.+ snowfall last winter in the Mid-Atlantic, I guess I better not tempt fate! I'll start this weekend to bring them in. Is there anything special I should be doing to prepare them for the winter?
This was the first time i had a brug bloom!!!! Such a pretty yellow. Now there are a few more blooms, i got up to a very cold morning and raced outside and got the brug and brought her in!!!! I am not sure what to do?? shold i just water sparingly and keep her in a sunny window all winter?
You can keep the growing in a sunny area... or let the plants go dormant in a darker, cool area. I kept most of my big ones dry in the dark basement last year. They dropped all they leaves and stop growing. If you want to keep them in a sunny area they'll continue to grow but much slower than they do in summer.
Ack and I have all of them except versi-peach!! ack and ack! I think they are all potted now though so I'll drag them right in! Than you Sue!! It got cold last night but we did not get the frost. They said we could get a killing frost tonight. :(
