Calla Lily replanting?

North Saanich, Canada

Hello. I bought some calla lily bulbs this spring, and not knowing much about them, planted them in small containers, two of them being hypertufa containers. One of the containers got three blooms on it, but none on the others. I now realize that they are in containers way too small for them. When should I redo them?? Just wondering if I should let them die down and then repot, or do it now, or just wait until spring.
Thanks for your help.

I would let your Calla Lily bulbs have a rest until Springtime. Make sure that you have shaken off the excess dirt and let them dry off for 2-3 days before storing them away for the winter. You can either place them in a labeled & dated paper bag or in a container that will allow them to get fresh air. In the Springtime, repot them in 1 gallon containers and/or in a moist & partly shady portion of your garden. They would greatly appreciate receiving Bulb Tone or other bulb fertilizer in the Spring. They will then reward you with beautiful flowers.

Good luck!

Also be aware that some colored callas take a very long time -- several years, in fact -- to bloom. There was a recent thread where some folks were complaining their yellow callas had never bloomed despite good growth over three and even four years! This made me feel better since I grow lots of callas and the only ones that didn't bloom were the yellow ones for me, too.

White standard callas can take water at any time, even dormant (heat makes them go dormant). Colored callas tend to be smaller and less aggressive, and need to be perfectly dry during dormancy or they will rot.

Good luck!

Well, this last post makes me feel really good about my callas. I only planted them this spring, not knowing really what they were. And lo and behold I got three yellow flowers in the one container, and it was the smallest container. The other two containers only had foliage. I guess I will wait for spring and put them in the ground then.

Congratulations! They are beautiful! Did you get them as "yellow callas" or do they have a name? I love their spotted foliage!

As far as I can remember, they were just packaged generically as yellow calla lilies. I love callas and thought I would give them a shot this year. Hopefully next year will be better!!!
