As with many of you, brug growing season is coming to an end here. I had 7 of them this year - some only had 1 bloom - but now are loaded with blooms. It's getting too darned cold at night to leave them out, so I've brought them in. Some I have no idea what they are - unnamed - so I am anxiously awaiting the blooms to open. Here's a picture of Ecuador Pink - it opened indoors last Friday. It's very pretty - and the first one I've ever had that had a flush of blooms.
End of season blooms
Mine looks a lot like yours, only smaller. It has five blooms open and they hang over the edge of the pot. I have EIGHT plants blooming right now! I'm so thrilled, this year was the first time that I had more than one plant bloom at a time, and more blooms than I could count on my fingers. Last night, I could smell the flowers at the front gate. The plants are in the backyard, at least 100 feet away, on the other side of the house!
She is a pretty one. Mine is full of buds, but I just can't bring them in. No room, so I'll just forego the blooms and look at all the pictures from other members.
DaturaLady I bet your house smells Heavenly.
Know what you mean Brugie. I live in an apartment and I have 7 of them - some 6 feet tall. I'm already feeling claustrophobic. Here's another picture of some of them that I've brought in - full of buds - waiting to see what they are.
One thing I learned this summer is that the smaller the pot - the smaller the plant - as with EP. This picture is of a brug that's in a 16" diameter pot and it is 6 feet tall. Planted out early May.
Well DonnaB, I'm somewhat smell challenged. Actually EP does not have a heavy scent. She's has just enough to know there is a scent - but not enough to be too noticeable. I'm not sure if she should be a heavily scented bloom (perhaps it's the time of the year) - can't say.
I've never noticed a great amount of fragrance on EP at any time of the year. Of course, I don't bend over much to smell them either. LOL!!
Hi Daturalady, this is my first year with brugs and looking for all the help I can find. I gave one to my folks and the other two are 6' tall and just got a pod on one. Dads is blooming like crazy, guess because his gets more sun. From your pictures, I should bring in the whole plant during winter. Like you, I have alot of house plants that have been out all summer and they have grown and I now have to bring them in too. But since I live alone in a small country house, it gets full when I bring in all the plants. Now, I guess I need to bring in the two brugs and sit them in the room. Looks like yours gets room temp. and room light. Is that better than chopping them up into stalks for planting? I'm doing it your way for now. Thanks, George
poorgeorge - I am not going to overwinter the brugs that are really tall in that state - I am going to take cuttings of those and repot them into smaller holding pots. I have 3 that were in small pots and are now only about 3-4 feet tall. Those ones I will not cut back - just keep them lightly watered. I'm going to experiment with the cuttings I do take, like rooting in straight vermiculite, oasis, rockwool, rooting large quantity of cuttings in a limited space that I got from the American Brugmansia & Datury Society web-site on cuttings. I don't know how to add a Hyperlink, so just copied their site into this thread.http://www.americanbrugmansia-daturasociety.org/brugcut.htm
You'll find a lot of really interesting stuff there.
Oh I just reviewed this thread and see that the hyperlink does come up. Click on the title at the bottom of the page about rooting Brugmansdia arborea species. I've pasted this hyperlink here too, so let's see if it works. http://www.americanbrugmansia-daturasociety.org/airlay%20and%20more.htm
Daturalady, that link was most helpful, thanks. Now I've got some homework to do, lol.
