Hoophouse

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Exactly what is a hoophouse as opposed to a greenhouse?

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

you can hoop it up in the hoop house...
Gotta be serious in the GH

Hoop house is a GH,its a brand name I think,I could be wrong,it just has a curved roof as opposed to a peaked roof

Oh. I loved my greenhouse where we lived before, but the homeowner's association won't allow anything like that now. I just have a covered patio, and hope I can put everything up closed to the doors and keep covered when it freezes or gets close to freezing. Somebody suggested a hoophouse and I wasn't sure what that was. Thanks for the answer. Guess I won't be able to hoop it up. Oh well, I'm getting too old anyway. lol

I'm fixing to build one similar to this one but has doors. I got the plans off the internet from the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. It is 12'x14' but I'm going to make it 12'x18 or 20' My concern is how to attach the plastic on the ends of the PVC.

Donna, can you send me that link please?

Thanks everyone. Maybe I can get my DH to build me one that is not very tall, so noone can see it from the front. That way the homeowner's association won't know. he he They are so strict where we live that it is ridiculous.

Donna, can you post the link here? I'm going to have to do SOMETHING, the house was stuffed last year. This year, I have brugs that were cuttings last year, bruglings that haven't bloomed yet, plumeria babies.............and that's not even getting to the plants that I already had!

I wrote a decent length message on the difference between a hoophouse and greenhouse and when I went to get a link, my message disappeared. LOL I was tired. Hoop House is also a company and has neat stuff for the not so handy. :) Here is a link to that company. http://www.hoophouse.com/reason.ccml?14,,10538,s310538,0,0,Index,ck_ten.html I do have a small scale one that I recover each year and use to start seeds and harden of indoor started seedlings. They do a wonderful job at extending the season. They'd be especially nice for those of you in warmer climates.

Here's the link http://www.bae.ncsu.edu/programs/extension/publicat/postharv/green/small_greenhouse.pdf they say it can be built for about 100 dollars but it will be more than that for me because my 6 mil plastic 24' x 28' cost me 55 dollars plus 15 shipping. I would rather the thicker plastic with a warrenty than the cheaper thinner stuff with no warrenty. That was the cheapest I could find it. .08 cents a square foot and has 4 yr. warrenty. Also I am planning on making it 20' instead of 14'. I haven't gotten the pipe and wood yet. I'm also going to make doors at both ends for ventilating instead of a frame at one end. It looks real easy though.
