North Saanich, Canada

Was very anxious for this very fat flower bud to open, and I don't know exactly what to call this. It isn't really a double is it??

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

Glenda, it is unique and very unusual with all those points. Do you know which one this is? In the picture it does show shades of lavender. . is this the actual color in person. Congrats on a beautiful bloom.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Glenda, I'd love to see a photo with the flower opened up. I bet it's a beauty with all those points!

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

It looks to me like some of the points are in the back ,so maybe its a double....

And if that color is correct I love it!

(Maggi) Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Gotta have it!! Outstandingly, unusually - unique! Got a little tongue-tied there. I only stutter now when I get really excited and this has put me in the stutter zone.

Ellabell, GA(Zone 8a)

Wow, that is different. I would also love to know if the violet color is for real.

North Saanich, Canada

Sorry to disappoint. Color not as great as you think. It is actually pink on the bottom, cream on the top. And yes, it has 12 points. I have taken some pictures in the dark tonight so will post them so you can all have a better look. LIght and color just was not great. I have no idea what a double is supposed to look like, so I guess someone needs to tell me. It's just one BIG flower!!!

what did you buy it as? what name?

North Saanich, Canada

Didn't buy it. Friend gave it to me last year. Never knew what a brugmansia was. This plant has done extremely well this year with well over 50 flowers yet to open, but not sure if it will get that far. It was 28 degrees here today . The flowers don't seem to be lasting as long as they did last year.
Anyway, I am posting two new pics so you can see.

By the way, this plant has three stems coming from the root, and one of the stems is doubled on one side. Double wide stem, just like two stems grew together.

very pretty Glenda. Do all the flowers have so many points or just the one?

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

Neat Glenda! It sounds like a fasciated stem. That would explain your 12-pointed flower too. If you could get a pic of the stem I'd love to see it. It happens a lot with lilies and members of the daisy family .... but this is the first I've heard of it happening with a brug. I don't think there's a lot of info known about why this happens. It's just one mother nature's curiosities.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

That is beautiful. The blooms look huge.

North Saanich, Canada

Kell, just the one flower is like this. I have been watching it for a long time, thinking the pod was very large, and was anxious for it to open as it just seemed a bit strange. And lo and behold, it is huge!!!
Poppysue, I will try and get a picture of the stem and post it today.

ggd, beautiful even if not lavender. I have had lily stems to fasciate. Very interesting happening. Hope you get to see a lot more opening. Donna

I thought there for a minute we would have to quit telling people there are NO purple brugs!!

North Saanich, Canada

Here is the picture of the striation. I never really noticed before, but there are three branches coming off the one. Guess I wasn't paying attention!!! It is the branch on the right that has the 12 point flower on it. I will also post another better picture of the flower, showing the size better.

Wow! It's huge. Love it.

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

This is one very large and pretty flower. Will be interesting to see if you get more of them.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

It is a very large flower. Your hand really shows how big it is. It is pretty and looks like a ruffle.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

That is really neat! Do you bring your plants in for the winter, Glenda? I wonder if that stem will continue to grow like a normal stem... or if you could root it. If you rooted it, I wonder if the whole plant would be like that. It would be really cool if it would throw out 12-pointed flowers all the time.

North Saanich, Canada

Because it rarely freezes here, most people just put their brugs in their garages for the winter. We don't have a garage, so will just put them under cover in a lean to we have in the yard. With last year being the first time we had a brug, we didn't know what we were doing. We just cut them down and left them outside in their pots. Once we found out you shouldn't do that, we put them under cover. In the spring, we never thought they would come up, but they gradually developed shoots right from the root. This plant actually has three stems coming from the root, and we hate to break it up. So might just leave it and see how it does next year!!!
Our second brug that we cut down last year is just now starting to bloom. But it is relaly cooling off here at night so not sure how long that will last.

I think I would take two of those stems and use them for cuttings, you would still have a large one to start earlier blooming in the spring
