Chilean rhubarb may be better known as Gunnera tinctoria (formerly G. chilensis), similar to G. manicata. Maybe this will help in the search for seeds, if someone knows it by another name.

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

I found a source for Gunnera tinctoria seeds at http://www.gardenmakers.com/

I don't know anything about this company or their service.

Just checked out your link, Ponditis. Looks like they only have G. manicata, which may not have the red coloring. Checked out the company in Garden Watchdog. and there is only one feedback, and that is negative. Back to googling...!

Noblesville, IN(Zone 5a)

Gunnera tinctoria is it I am pretty sure. I will have to check about the horse tail.

Okay, let's keep looking!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Forest Farm has both kinds of gunnera in one gallon size pots for $12 each. I have ordered from this company and had great service and plants from them. http://www.forestfarm.com/

Great source, Ponditis. Wish I had room for one. I see they are calling it G. chilensis, the old name, with tinctoria in (). The seeds are supposed to be really tiny too, funny when the plant is so huge!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

John, I have heard the seeds are remarkably hard to get to sprout and they must be fresh.

"down the Shore", NJ(Zone 7a)

Really? Maybe they need to be sown right where they are to grow, shady and wet? That must be why they produce so many thousands of fine seeds, so a few grow. Imagine if they all sprouted in the wild!

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

It would be the end of the world as we know it. These plants are SPINY lol

Ponditis,
.... OMG...did you see that darling picture on Forest Farms 'Seasonal Information' page...I feel an urge to HUG something...lol

Lincoln City, OR(Zone 9a)

Hug away Scooterbug. Isn't that an awesome catalog even without the pictures? I love it just for the info but they really have great plants there. We are going to do a road trip in the spring and go buying some neat stuff over there. Can't wait.
