Hi
Does anyone know of a plant that will climb a wall
and blooms in shade. My neighbor said I could grow
something on his building that faces my yard.
Need something bright and hardy.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any help
Climber
I have no clue since you requested "blooms in the shade"... Ivy will climb the wall but it doesn't flower.
gotta be something - nature is not limited
I had this same question a few years ago(beforeDG) and a master gardener suggested 'Zéphirine Drouhin Rose. It is a thornless climber and I have it on a arched trellis in complete shade and it does great!Lou
My neighbor has that and I love it. It is very vigorous, the roses are lovely and have a nice scent. I don't know if it will take dense shade.
I will look into it. Thanks
research indicates that it should not be grown against a wall
because it is suspectible to mildew and black spot but it is a contender........This is not deep shade. It is just shaded until noon each day.
I found a master list of shade tolerant plants - I will look at it this weekend and see if I can come up with anything.
gosh sounds like a beautiful plant though
Roxroe, There are several varieties of climbing hydrangea that bloom in full shade. The only down side is that they may take 3-4 years to bloom. Nat
oh gardening makes one patient....if nothing else.
I didn't know Hydrangea climbs.....learn something new everyday!
Roxroe - - - I am not talking about the hydrangea bush - - there are climbing hydrangea vines. See attachedhttp://plantsdatabase.com/go/1053/ and http://plantsdatabase.com/go/147/
Thanks
I just added this climbing Hydrangea seemanii to my shade garden http://plantsdatabase.com/go/59020/ . It is my understanding it has some very interesting flowers. Will post pictures when it blooms (hopefully in less than 4 years!) Also, note that the climbing Hydrangeas use adventitious roots to cling to surfaces. Might be a bad choice for the side of a house. Here in CA it is considered a potential high moisture situation, and will be sited in the pest report when you sell.

Great link! Quite a few contenders - Thanks!
Roxroe, what is your hardiness zone? I'll look it up in my flower encyclopedia and see what your options are. Email me, as I may not find this thread again.
Karrie
zone = 6b here
warmer than spokane
is it cold there now?
Actually it's warmed up quite a bit from the sub-zero temps we had at the first of the year. It's been around 40 this week. Let me see what I can find for you Rox.
Thanks
It has been colder that a _________
you know the rest
Rox,
Most of the shade climbers like the South. But there are some here that MIGHT work for you. With the global warming, you might be able to do these:
Trumpet Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) (zone 7,8,9)
http://plantsdatabase.com/search.php?search_text=Trumpet+Honeysuckle&Search.x=52&Search.y=17
Pink Anemone Clematis (Clematis montana "Ruebens") (zones 5,6,7,8,9) http://plantsdatabase.com/search.php?
search_text=Clematis+montana+&Search=Search
Karrie
Cup-and-Saucer Vine (part shade) (Cobaea scandens) (zones 5,6,7,8,9,10) http://plantsdatabase.com/search.php?search_text=Cup-and-Saucer+Vine+&Search=Search
Calico Dutchman's Pipe (Aristolochia elegans) (zones 7,8,9,10) http://plantsdatabase.com/search.php?search_text=Calico+Dutchman%27s+Pipe&Search=Search
Those are the ones I came up with. If this is PART shade, then you would have many more options. Let me know.
Somehow one of the copies and pastes I did screwed that up. But all of those are in the plants database.
thanks for your time
