This is what happens if you dont remove the pups from mom. You get a thick cluster of banana trees.

They are all huge now. They will die back over the winter. Last year, they were 2. The 2 became 8. Next year, I will have to divide them. I cant have 32 trees growing in the same place. Remind me in the spring, I will be happy to share.

I KNOW where she lives, but I AIN'T telling! Hey, Lisa - how does the mail man ever find your house? How does the dog find a place to take care of his business? Your yard and plants are as amazing as YOU ARE! Hugs

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Yea, every day the mailman gets out of his truck, dons a hard hat, grabs his machete, and starts his trek through my jungle. A few have gotten lost along the way, never to be seen again. One guy put down breadcrumbs so he wouldnt get lost, and the squirrels thought he was feeding them. (grin, as she exagerates!)

on a serious note. rylaff, a friendly advice. i was born and originally raised from the orient. banana trees are known to do damage on house structures.

in the orient, nanas are planted 25' or more away from any building structures. u do not want any nana's emerging inside ur house, do u???

if i were in ur shoe, i would start chopping off the pups of ur nanas, pot them in 1 gal. pots. that is what i used to do when i was living in Los Angeles. if u wait later, it would be much harder to separate them and may do more damage. think about it. jmho

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

I will keep that in mind. Most of the nanas are way too big to do that. However, I noticed the other day that there are a couple of new pups that are only a few inches tall. If they dont die off, I plan to separate them and put them in pots.

sorry rylaff, i did not mean to scare u. i made the same mistake too.

i did not know anything about gardening till i came to the US 40 some odd yrs. ago. where i originated from, we have gardener to tend to our yard. and farm workers to till the farms for my grandparents.

when i used to lived in LA, i planted nanas 7' away from the garage. i thought that was far enough, but the rhyzomes sure travel fast and far. one winter, from the cemented floor of the garage, nana pups were emerging. at the time, i did not have no choice but to get rid of the nana plants. i had to spend more money fixing the garage than enjoying the nanas.

an experienced that cost me so dearly.

Beverly Hills, CA(Zone 10a)

Hey Scooterbug maybe the first order of business for the SECRET SOCIETY OF THE NANAS could be to take MaVieRose' advice & help out any poor nanas we see lurking too close to a structure!! Mavierose, you lived in LA LA Land? Did you leave any nanna's behind?
