This is a seedling with brown patches on the stem. Is it bad?
Creeping Crud?
that's what my solid gold had and I just tossed it day before yestrday. I'm not taking any chances with loosing any of my brugs because of one bad one.
GET RID OF IT!!!
Poppysue, the HG looks like cork. HG is definitely prone to getting cork.
My HG looks like light tan cork, have had it for 3 yrs. it has had buds that fall of like everyone elses'. I am NOT throwing it away. Solid Gold looked completely different, like fungus rot, from too much rain, or whatever?
Gee if it is not one thing it is another!!! I was looking at my Kell's Girlie Girl last night and the leaves look odd. I really think the more you have of a variety the more prone you are to getting all sorts of crud.
Sue, I have a small HG rooted that was for Root then he got another one, so if you need one let me know. Of course mine has never even gotten buds so I can't say it is a great specimen...LOL!
I was planning to trash the HG anyhow. I want plants that will bloom! To me it just looks like brown bark. It's not swollen like a growth, or mushy like rot. Either way... it's trash.
What about the seedling? Most of the stem is green but there's a couple patches of brown on it. I hate to trash that one cuz it's a Tiara baby.
I guess it's not my day!
poppysue, what happened to your other seedling with stuff on it? i would probably use fungicide on it and see what happens. i guess today is not HG's day, it dropped it's last 4 inch bud and will be gone tomorrow. i think i'll burn it. i don't want brugs that don't bloom either, lol.
Arlene, I'm probably about one week behind you and will be doing the same thing. I have a friend who thinks it is terrible to get rid of it, but I could have something pretty in its place.
I was checking that one out today and it looks like it healed over. The scar is still there but it doesn't like fungus or anything. I've been spraying with a Safer bug/fungicide spray. My brugs seem to get lots of scars on them... from rubbing against the stakes, or from bugs chewing. I'm never really sure if they're just battle injuries or something worse.
Mine do also Sue. They are very tender skinned. Can you keep it isolated for awhile to see if it goes further?
Monika, What do you think of the top photo? Does it look like the start of stangelbrand to you?
Any ideas on why this happened...Humidity, fertilizer, virus or just plain ole "something to contend with".
Have you tried Fungicides.... :o(
From what I've gathered so far... it's a bacterial infection and can be spread by contaminated cutting tools. I know we've discussed sterilizing tools before .... but I'll ask again.... what does everyone use to clean clippers? I've been dipping them in alchohol and passing them over a flame to burn the alchohol off. Is that an adaquate method?
I dip mine in a Fungicide... the same stuff I spray on the Plants...if I'm out, then I use bleach...And living in south Texas we are prone to fungus and such so we have to keep up with takeing care of our tools....I even dip my hoe and shovels in it to....
I wash my hands and gloves in Bleach....don't put the fungicides on yourself...that is a No...No
:o)
I would watch the seedling. As long as the leaves and leaf stalks not affected, it could be a injury.
I was carrying a spray bottle of diluted bleach, 1 to 10 but then I read bleach does not kill viruses, only boiling in hot water does. So I bought a total of 7 cheap pairs of clippers and a cheap stainless steel pot (Tom was having fits when I would use his Circulon).
After each plant, the clipper goes into the to boil pile and I pick up a new one as needed. Then I heard ammonia kills some things. I now boil water with added ammonia and cook all my tools for 5 minutes minimum. I usually do this 2 to 3 times a weekend. I also boil, after each use, my curved hemostats that I use to rip out the anthers from the bloom.
Now that I have gotten used to it, it is easy to do. Also keep a small shovel in each garden area. Of course my big shovel goes all over so I kind of defeat that!! LOL. However I have been know to clean my shovels with bleach. I am switching to ammonia.
I also wear disposable gloves and I change them when I go from brug to brug.
And then there are the disposable gowns, masks, shoe covers and hair nets I wear.............. kidding!
No, I am not a clean nut but I am a nurse! Well, I guess I am a nutty nurse! LOL

Gee, wish most nurses were careful with their patients. Last year my little grandbaby was taken to the emergency room with double pneumonia. The emergency room nurse dropped the end of her IV tube on the floor and picked it up and reattached it. I wanted to scream at her. Especially since this baby has severe immunity problems and has to get IGG transfusions every 3 wks. Hopefully, she will outgrow them as she gets older, but at that time she was very sick even before she contacted pneumonia.
Jeeze kell, Now I really am confused-er ;-)
.......everywhere i look it still says 99-1 household bleach kills viruses.....I learned this from EMT's and Doctors and firemen and local sherrif deputies (All members of the gym) when I was managing a health club and the aids virus issue came up as far as cleaning the equipment and the shower/locker rooms ..........arghhhhh :-(
Welcome to my club Scooterbug!
I go with what ever way the wind blows! LOL. If I got stuck with an Aids needle I would definitely stick my finger in 100% bleach ASAP! And open the wound as I did it!!! However, I have no idea what the difference is between plant and animal viruses. Or if you can share them! I doubt it though.
I have read it on several different sites but this one place comes to mind right now. See #7.

Thanks kell,Your Hyperlink looks like some good reading for me later this evening.
ALSO;
.....That is a good question,if there is a diff between a species viruses.something else to look into.......
Ta-Ta SB
I ordered a bottle of Physan 20. It sounds like it will kill everything.
What is that Sue??? Is it a spray on and you keep going?
I was wondering if the stuff we use to clean instruments would work well. There is one kind that kills 99% of everything in 10 minutes. However, how would I know if it was working?
Never did believe in killing everything...you also wipe out beneficials causing more problems.
........Food for thought........
................Reminds me of about 20 yrs. back in the horse breeding business..the mega buck farms with the mega stallions started disinfecting "Everything" concerned in the breeding sheds. We all followed that belief until a few years later we started getting all kinds of 'new' infectious problems. Now the procedure has changed by not going overboard and thereby killing the good buggz.

Edited to read......I do believe in killing everything concerning non-living items....ie toolz ,axez,skissors,etc....lol

I was reading about this stuff last night. I guess the orchid growers use it a lot.... http://www.physan.com/PAGES/home.html
I figured I'd give it a shot and see if I like it. Looks like it will be good to use for cuttings too. I'm mainly concerned with my tools. I don't have 7 pairs of clippers like Kell!
Let me know how you like the product..............so I will wait to see what you two think of it....Concerned because of chemical allergies here =(

Ladies, I cannot stress this stronly enough, "Be Careful, very carefull" with these Fungicides. My grandfather lost one eye after spraying his roses.. Apparently he used his hankerchif to wipe sweat and rubbed his eye in the process. He didn't wash the stuff out properly and that night we rushed him to the hospital. The Dr.s did all they could but it was to late and the eye was lost....
Adhere to the directions on the bottle, they are serious, and cover yourself well, and wash yourself from head to toe later...
Make sure you clean all spray equipment up afterwards,so you won't contaminate yourself when you use it later...
Sorry to tell you a horror story, but I would be sorrier if something happened to one of you and I had said nothing..
Dee
oh dear Willowwasp. That sounds terrible. I had no idea you could get enough in your eye from just rubbing it. I already have problems with my eyes. I have been getting very lax about wearing my googles. The other night I sprayed myself in the face with Neem.
Thanks Sue! I will look into this. I bet it the same stuff they sell to sterilize instruments but under a different name.
Physan is also good to water in new seeds. Helps to prevent damp off. I use it a lot. Have had seedlings start to damp off and just by spraying diluted physan, it has stopped the problem. Great for cleaning the greenhouse too. This product has lots of uses.
I have used this and really like it, true it does stop the damp off in its tracks....... :o)
I also read somewhere it helps prevent fungus gnats because it kills the fungus they feed on.
Physan is good for desinfection of tools, pots etc. I use Mennoflorades (Benzoe Acid). Stängelbrand prone plants were watered with a 1% solution with no effect.
What is Physan and where do you get it. I am very allergic to fungicides(Sulfa)
Donna, I just did a google search and ordered from one of the on-line companies. I bet the product label is available too so you can see what's in it.
10% bleach will kill a virus including HIV. Cleaning your tools in a 10% bleach should be fine. I work in a Lab and we use 10% bleach to clean the counters and to clean up any spill of body fluids. Do not use strait or un-diluted bleach. Bleach is not effective until it has been mixed with water. I know a lot of people think that alcohol kills germs, but it does not. Alcohol will slow down the growth, but will not kill it. Alcohol is a cleansing agent, so please do not use it to clean any of your gardening tools. Forgive me if I got a little carried away on the cleaning agents.
Cindy
We use 10% bleach also Cindy in our lab but I thought it was diluted at 10% to keep it from frying everything it touched yet still be effective at that percentage. It supposedly is only good for 10 days once diluted.
However, I have read in several places where it does not kill brug viruses. So beware! I have no idea what is true or not.
i just read a UF study conducted with serious fungal diseases. bleach was best, followed by liquiid lysol, then physan, then something else.
believe it or not, bleach is considered environmentally friendly when it breaks down.
hey Cindy!!! I knew you were here somewhere! LOL!!
