Cherry bushes

I was very interested when Shoe mentioned he had a nanking cherry bush. I've wanted to try those for years. Are they "real" cherries, just like those off the trees? How much can one bush produce? Are the ones they call "sand cherry" any good?
Here where the birds are entirely too interested in cherries, it would be great to have something small enough to protect fairly easily.
Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen a cherry yet (too soon I suppose).

I was hoping for an answer too! I just planted a couple weeks ago. I figure the birds can have them and I'll plant a tree or two.
