Baby Hummingbirds!!

Wildwood, FL(Zone 9a)

Every year I have hummingbirds some years more than others like last years hummingbird wars there were so many. Just now my husband knocked on the window and told me there were tiny hummers out in the flowers come see. I couldnt believe it four baby small hummers all over the yellow lantana and red agh I cant remember the name. They didnt know to be afraid of us. I was on all fours with my face almost in the plants and did have my nose buzzed a couple of times by the little ones. They must have been as long as a quarter. It was almost dark I had hummers near the ground and bats flying overhead. I love my land. Of course I immediately started planning the great gobs of yellow lantana I will plant next spring.

How lucky you are. I've planted all sorts of stuff that hummers are supposed to LOVE, but I have yet to see a single hummer!

BG, I'm wondering if they like the country more than suburban life. Most people I talk to who live in the country here have lots of hummers. I live in the suburbs and I get a few and people in the city get none. That's certainly not scientific but just my observations. My sister lives in rural Arkansas in the Ozarks and she gets loads at her feeders. They were fighting so much she had to put up more feeders. I've had a male, a female and 2 juveniles but they are never in the yard or at the feeder at the same time. I know that the two juveniles were not the same bird because of the way they reacted to the feeder. One sat and the other one I saw at a later time didn't understand how to use the feeder. I've read they aren't very tolerant of each other. So Delisa do you live in the country? What a treat to see the babies so close.

Yes I do live in the country. My husband did see one hummingbird at my plants right before we moved out to the country. Here they are every where.

I live in town and have hummers everywhere! They are so cute and love my firespike the best. The first year I have had them in abundance. I sit out on my porch and watch them every chance I get.

I believe these were baby hummingbird moths. I really do have hummingbirds but these when seen in more light were moths.
