What's makes an e-mail bounce

I received an e-mail from a list I subscribe to saying that my e-mail was bouncing, what does this mean and why does it happen. Also my friend uses AOL and I use netscape she cannot send mail to me or I to her, AOL told her that I had too many numbers and letters in my address....what does that mean??? Please help I'm very confused, I've had the same e-mail address for atleast 3yrs and never had this problem before.
