above ground concrete pond

Hawkesbury, ON(Zone 4b)

I am looking for info on how to construct a 3-4 ft concrete pond and golddog was kind enough to send me here. This pond would be a water source as well as decorative.

Orlando, FL(Zone 9b)

Hmmm...I've only ever had a pond with a flexible liner and it was in the ground. What is this going to be a water source for?

I have a question and some advice too. In zone 5a how will you keep anything alive in this pond through the winter? We usually recommend a four foot depth for ponds here in zone 6 if you wish to keep koi or goldfish alive during the winter and at least 3 feet depth for waterlilies.

Butterfly, The water will be t collected to water the garden. There is much rock so it has to be above ground. I will but guppies in to eat the misqoties. When it comes time for jack frost I will bring fish in house. I just need it to me 3-4 ft. It will be visible so I preferr not to use a plastic container.

Hi ponditis, I won't be keeping anything over winter. I will use guppies to eat the misquoit larve because they are small and the birds and racoons will not bother with them.

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

Hau, On a local TV station here (zone 5a) same as you. they made a concrete block pond. Built on a slab , 6 inches thick, and all the blocks wewe cememted together, stacking alternatly so seams were not the same ,they went 4 blocks high. After the mortar dried they painted the inside with sealer, like ugli sealer. Check With your local builder supply they can tell you which ones are nontixic. as they were building the pond they put a pvc drain in the corner at the bottom using a 2 inch pipe and a screw in plug,so it would drain eaisly to the out side. they chipped away enough of one block so it would fit and then filled in around it with mortar. After they were finished it was painted.
I hope this helps, remember in winter it cold and probibly well freexe solid, I would drain it in the fall. I hope you are putting a pump and filter in it, for the fish still water can get really funky........

With this pond being above ground and not needing to handle life through the winter you will be alright without any liner. My biggest worry would be cracking of the concrete. Maybe you can find a concrete contractor who will tell you how to do it to avoid cracks. A few guppies in a fairly large volume of water should not soil it very much so you will be ok without a filter unless you put a large fish load into it.

Tanks Ponditis, I will check with a contractor as you suggested.

Thanks badseed. Those rocks are amazing. I was able to track down the owner of the garden and he sent me in the right direction for a pond like his.
