the Annual Sunflower but not any of the showy annuals available these days.
I would like seeds of the roadside Helianthus annus like I have saw when in Texas a few years back. Anyone live near Ladybird Johnsons wild flower place?
looking for seeds of Helianthus annus
I raised three different annual sunflowers this year but none would fit your definition of the wild variety. I did raise a little short one that is about 30 inches tall and a Moulin Rouge, a taller dark mahogany one. Mark, do you know if sunflowers cross pollinate and your seed would not necessarily be exactly the same as you planted? My surmise is that that would be so.
Mark we have many different tall sunflowers scattered all over the country. Kansas is known as the sunflowewr state. I have some seeds from 2002(most 2003 seeds here arent ready yet or were drowned yesterday by Isabel. I dont know if they are what you are hunting-I will look at them afterwhile and get back to you. Shirley
here are some of my other perennial sunflowers http://www.marksgardenplants.com/helianthus.htm
Helianthus annus is the true wild annual with small flowers but lots of them which are just a few inches across. The seeds are much bigger than grains of rice
This is Helianthus annus that I photographed in Texas
Sorry dont have anything like that Mark. No brown center. All around here have green centers
Mark,
I just checked in my Nebraska/Great Plains weed book and it looks like that what is growing in all the road ditches. It is very common here. I doubt if the seeds are ripe yet, but I will check in the next few days. You're right, it is an annual. There is also a saw-tooth sunflower(Helianthus grosseserratus) listed, but I don't know if we have any around here.
Bitty I have that one thanks.
Marclay can you take a photo of the grren centred plants or find out a latin name for me? They sound interesting.
Mark, hi....I saw this very tall Helianthus "Lemon Queen" at one of our nurseries yesterday....what a striking plant! Going back to back a couple today...lovely photos! Elaine

Mark send me your address and I will send also some of these that grow here. as well as the green eyed ones??? probably not a native sunflower but grows like one.
thanks everyone but H annus is still top of the list
I tried to send you a photo thru your e-mail, but it was rejected..let me know if your e-mail blocks Yahoo attachments.. Antoinette
I can receive them OK. Did you send it back with the email I sent to you?
ok
Hi Mark,
Yes tried to send as a reply, will try again.. I picked the seeds and the birds are having a hayday here.. What size of an area are planning.. I put in quite a few, but when I tried to blow the chaff away, I lost alot of the seeds.. will mail them to you in a few days (and pick a few more), and in the meantime will try to send the photo, they look just like the one you posted.. just wanting to make sure.. Antoinette
I'm only going to plant some in an area about 45 x 20 feet. But if I get an allotment as planned I'll plant some there too.
The sunflower seeds that we feed the birds produce flowers that look just like the picture you posted on September 19. If you're interested in those, e-mail me.
Marclay your seeds arrived yesterday thanks very much. Can you tell me more about the 'tall multi head yellow flower'?
Hi Mark, the photos are not going through, even tried one at a time. So, I will just mail the seeds, let me know if you will be needing any Jeruseluem Artichoke seed also, have that and some swamp sunflower seed (have maximilliani, but you say you have that one? The swamp sunflower seed I got in a trade, but the others are from my yard.. if you can get someone here to accept my photos and then post them here, I will gladly send them to them.. otherwise, they will be in the mail to you on Monday, but if you want any of the other seed, please let me know, it is just as easy to send them along with the other one. Sorry about the long wind here.. A
bitty1, Hi there, just fill out the little customs form at the PO, it is PS Form 2976 and list "Garden Seeds", and also make sure that put on there "GIFT - No Value", that way they don't charge him any customs fees.. I send that way to Canada, Brazil, UK, and China.. as long as you fill out that form, you should be alright.. they all have received all the packages I sent.. It covers you and the recipient.. Take care and happy gardening.. Antoinette
Gourd do you mean you cant email me the photos or you cant post them here on DG?
Mark, was trying to e-mail them to you but they kept coming back as host unknown, daeman undeliverable, etc.., I don't know how to post them here either.. but, will learn someday..
However, I think they went through with this last e-mail from you.. finally.. take care. A
To post images on DG or anywhere else you go you need to save the images into a file on your desktop and name it "FOR DAVES" like I have done.
The capitals are for highlighting purposes and not shouting at you.
To make a folder RIGHT CLICK on your DESKTOP, a list will open and at the top click on FOLDER. This makes the folder and immediately allows you to name it.
To post a photo - below the box where you type there is a button that says BROWSE. Click it and select where your folder is. You will select DESKTOP and then click on the folder the image is in. DOUBLE CLICK on the image and then click the SEND button below browse. This sounds very complicated but once you try it is easy. You can practise without posting a photo.
Now for the size of your images. They are too big to post on DG. Using Photoshop, or whatever software you use, click on IMAGE on the top TOOL BAR. Select IMAGE SIZE and change it to 600 pixels wide. Click on FILE and click on SAVE AS and select the folder FOR DAVES.
Oh, after seeing the photos together to compare, I don't think the flowers are the same. Close though, (they are yellow).. well what can I say.. the ones above that you posted have many more petals. Hope you find some, but will send these off to you.. Thank you for the instructions on posting photos, just starting to learn this stuff in the past couple of weeks, I will try a little bit later to post a photo somewhere on DGs. A
