Here's my gingers, they are in the ground and ...again....I have no blooms........
What do I do with them to winter them over corectly, maybe thats what I'm doing wrong, someone mentioned I should let them go dormant in the winter and by keeping them growing all winter was stressing them out,and thats why they don't bloom
over wintering gingers
I am a first timer at this, will be looking forward to mine being as big as yours!
sure hope I have better luck over wintering then my cannas.
The tallest one in the back looks like two of the gingers I have (either a Hedychium or Zingiber) and both of those are supposed to go dormant from about Nov. to May. My curcumas also go dormant for the winter about that same timeframe. I have only had one curcuma for more than a year and it died back on it's own. I'm not sure what else to tell you. JustmeLisa probably knows, she seems to be one of the resident DG ginger experts. Maybe Calalily knows, too.
As to the no blooms, I was just asking about that one myself on my new gingers. The ones I have like a good amount of sunshine and a monthly feeding. Maybe you need to up the sun and food to get them to bloom.
They are in full sun on top of my leachfeild, plenty on fertilizer there......
When Calalily had a coop last year on gingers there was a paper notice that came with it. Seems like I remember someone posting about it and said it wasn't in the box they got. It was something about dormanacy. I'll see if I can find it on the computer and email to you. I overwintered them in the basement and let them all go dormant. All of them came back but after I broke the arm I never put them in the ground but one did bloom sititng in the pots. I lost my harddrive last year is the reason I might not have it any more.
Mine have just started to bloom. I'm talking about the ones I already had. Red and white ones. I would think it's not time yet for blooms there . I have had blooms up past Thanksgiving and that's not unusual it happens more often than not.
I found the article that I mentioned. Anyone want a copy send me your email address and I'll send to you.
Hi CC, I tired to make out your gingers from the pictures. For sure the taller ones in the back are Hedchyiums. They will go dormant after your first light frost. They can be left in ground up to zone 7. They still might bloom for you this year, it all depends when your first frost hits and how much more hot weather yall get. Most Hedchyiums start blooming here for us in mid summer, given your temps, it will take longer if they bloom at all.(sorry) The varigated one in the front looks like Alpinia Zerumbet Variegated or Alpinia Zerumbet "Chinese Beauty" . Both of those are gingers that bloom on last years growth, so if it goes dormant at all for you, it will not bloom. The smaller wide leafed ginger in the front looks maybe like a Curcuma, I am not too sure on that one, hard to make out. Curcuma's have a natural dormancy.(they are hardy to zone 8).
I hate to say this, but being in zone 5, you might need a heated greenhouse to enjoy blooms on your gingers. (I bet your temps are starting to cool off now)
Gingers will not break dormacy until the soil temps reach 70* or higher. As the day length decreases (less than 12 hrs) and temps drop, the flowering production of gingers will decrease (that is what leads me to think yours will not bloom--insert sad face here--)
So, with all that said, enjoy your foliage at least..! Remember, gingers hail from the tropical regions of Asia, few in Africa and north Australia, also Madagascar. That is the climate they like.
I don't know much about caring for gingers outside of zone 9, so I hope this helps you out a little bit.
CC, you could try letting them go dormant in the winter, then forcing them to grow earlier in the spring by putting them on a heat mat. That would give you a longer growing season.
I let my variegated zingiber get too cold last winter and it's not going to bloom this year but all the others have either bloomed already or are blooming now.
The most important thing to remember when they are dormant is to not water. Let them rest a while in the winter, then warm them up and let them start sprouting before you start watering them. If you have a heat mat, it's more economical than heating the whole greenhouse to 70*F.
GRC, in my zone, (and you gotta be warmer) I am leaving mine in the ground. The lady (who let me dig up some of hers) had hers planted next to her house with a southern exposure. She had just let them die and didn't cut them back at all. It looked a mess, but when I went to dig them up in late February, they were already throwing horns up underneath that mess. Hers were in just about solid clay too! I will cut off the stalks, but will either lay the stalks back down over them or mulch with something drier.
I don't think we can go wrong--they sure like to grow!
I really don't do anything special to my gingers and they return and bloom year after year....I'm sure being in zone 8b helps.
OK,the tallest one one the right side is one I've had for 3 years,I've never let it go dormant,2 winters it spent in the house and last year was in the heated GH....still no blooms...
The 2 variegated ones...same story, have NEVER gone dormant
I thought maybe they HAD to go dormant and since I havent let them ,thats why they've never bloomed.....
all the others are from susies co-op
I'm giving them ONE more year....if they won't bloom for me, its trade time!(Although I will keep the variegated ones, they are pretty anyhow...)
OH OH OH!!!!!
I have 2 buds on my big ginger!!!
I dug them all up to go in the gh and figure out what I was going to do with them in there are these buds on 2 of the stalks....
I moved it into a big tub and its in my livingroom,in front of the south facing sliding glass doors
Will it bloom ?????
Please oh please say yes
You Whupped me on a ginger bloom????You get a Happy dance for that!!!!!
