Will my brugs. be ok in an unheated garage for the winter? It feels just as cold in the garage as it does outside to me.
Unheated Garage
It depends if it freezes in your garage or not. What zone are you in?
Cactus, I am in zone 6 and have had things do very well in the garage. Unless I pop up a greenhouse like tomorrow, I will be doing the garage too as the fruit cellar is full and the basement will be my bedroom soon. LOL Anyway, I had air potatoes, canna, purple heart, a bunch of summer bulbs, cuphea, gomphrena, etc. over winter in a pot. I haven't tried brugs but this may be the year.
I'm in zone 7b.
I would think you'd be okay, so long as they are not up close to the door where they would get gusted with cool breezes. I'd wait for an expert opinion though.
We need someone in zone 7b to answer that question...anyone want to jump in here? My Garage doesn't freeze but I'm in 8b and we don't get that much cold weather here.
I am in OKC z7a/b and my garage is south facing. As long as I don't have something on an outer wall it will not freeze. (Meaning that it has to be against the north side of the garage) I would be interested to see what anyone else in this zone would have to say.
How much light would they need? I thought about the garage, but it doesn't have windows.
I keep things in the garage. Most years they do good but last winter the ones against the garage door got too cold and turned to mush. We had a really cold winter though.
I wouldn't keep Versicolor brugs out there. I think, even tho it doesn't freeze, it might get too cold for them.
The few Brug cuttings that I have started...well I planned to keep them in the basement. Does that sound like it would work? This is my first year with Brugs, actually this is my first month with Brugs...LOL!!! I plan to bring one or two inside, but the other 3 will have to be in the basement. Hope that will work. Please LMK !!!
Thank you everyone for your help.
I grow them in the basement. Had a few die last year because they weren't well enough rooted and then it was too cold down there. This year will be different. They will get good roots before they go down there. Hopefully.
I don't have that many so,I think I will bring a couple in the house just in case the ones in the garage don't make it.
Brugie, I hate to sound dumb. I know what versicolor means, all my brugs start coming out pale yellow then change color. Does versicolor mean something different in Brugs? How cold can a brug get and live.
Lizh, a versicolor brug refers to the type, not the color. Blooms on a versicolor will end up hanging straight down/verticle. They need to stay warmer than the other types of brugs by several degrees or they will die. Mine will be kept at about 55 degrees this year. They croaked at 40 degrees. I was lucky enough to have cuttings in the house so I didn't lose the variety in the end, just the big plants.
Thanks Brugie for clearing that up.
