Those are absolutely beautiful! Those 3 sets of filaments are great. Are those Soldier caterpillars? I wish I had those in California. I said it before & I'll say it again, you folks down there have the most diverse & beautiful species of butterflies. I'm so jealous!
Moonlighting, you are SOOOOO lucky!!! Those are queen caterpillars you've got there. They will turn into a beautiful rusty orange/red butterfly. Here's a picture of an adult male (the black "spots" on the inside of the hindwing are how you know it's a male--those emit pheremones or something like that, females don't have these:

Hello Floridian - I'm gonna go back and see if I can find them since I saw these on back on Friday and didn't know one could "contain" them...if I find them I will do what I can to watch them do their thing.... (Ü) ....
I made little butterfly hatcheries so I can bring my little cats in and watch them grown and change into b'flies. Here's how I did it: http://davesgarden.com/t/369259/
You can use an old fish aquarium if you have one and put a mesh screen on top.
I've only ever had one cat escape from my hatcheries, a black swallowtail. Boy, was he tough to find! He climbed on one of my houseplants and I had to cut part of the plant off and pin it to the top of the hatchery. Here he is on the plant getting ready to go into chrysalis

You know these little Cryslist are so pretty,I told ML they like you could almost make a pendant out of them...They are such a pretty soft green and the little gold spots "glow". They'r just so intresting. Can't wait for them to hatch

ML, you are more generous than I. I'm not sure I would have given one chrysalis up, much less both. But I guess you have another one coming yet...It will be a while before that one is ready to go into chrysalis.
I hear ya Butterfly - but it is hard to say no when its your mother......lol....
This is an update on the 2 Cats I brough home. They both surprised me and hatched before I new it. Didn't get a photo of them breaking out of the cryslist just a before and after. But it was intresting none the less. I will post this and other pic's.... :o)
