I'm sitting here wondering whether to pack my brugs into the garage or not. It's 46 degrees now, and I don't think we will hit the freezing point, but wondering if it's still getting too cold for them? Some of them have buds and one has a bloom.
I'm not that familiar with brugs yet, so I'm not sure if it's too cold for them even if it's not freezing.
Hoping someone is still awake. :)
How much cold can they take?
u got mail.
Some do well and some don't. I know here in the deep south Whiskers, My Suaveolens White, and Dr Suess can with stand a couple of light frost before becomming damaged.
Mine do fine outside unless it actually frosts. and then they usually are fine, maybe a few burned leaves on top. A freeze is another matter.
Hi Joan :) I did a test last year. Mine are primarily in pots within 15 feet of the south side of the house. Last year I moved all but two them in and out of the carport on freezing mornings and found that 28 degrees with a light sheet over them is about as low as they can go without starting to lose leaves. 34-36 degrees with no cover, on the patio does not seem to even phase them. Note that our brugs get acclimated to cold evenings during the fall. Obviously, you are taking your chances with anything below 32 degrees. I brought mine in mid October last year. I am loaded with buds, but still haven't seen one flower yet, so I will be pushing the envelope again this year ;)
Thank you all so much! I was sort of in a panic last night. I knew it wasn't going to acually freeze, but it was mighty cold and I was worried about the ones that had buds mostly. I only had a few last year and got lucky with the guessing game, but this year I have more and don't want to take a chance. I've fallen in love with them.
I left them out last night, and today I moved them all closer to the house so they will be easy to take into the garage when it's dark if I have to. I do want them to get fairly cold before I bring them into the crawl space to go dormant. I just can't remember for sure when I brought them in last year. But then, each year up here is different too.
RiseAnn, I appreciate you giving me the results of your test. That helps me a lot! I don't think I could stand to chance anything below freezing with them though. They are my babies. I have one that's blooming and several that have buds. I hope you get blooms this year too. Growing brugs up here is a challenge isn't it? But, that's what makes them so special. :)
MaVie, I just checked all my emails and I didn't get the one you sent me?

Versicolors are more sensitive to cold. Some of mine got too cold last year and I had cell-blast on several of the versis. They recovered okay without any damage but if I had left them any longer they may not have.
poppysue has a point, I have a number suaveolens X ?hybrids, Whiskers, Dr. Seuss and Jean Pasko, no versicolors. I know how intoxicating these guys can be, but I've already decided that any new seedling that doesn't perform is getting the death penalty this year. I have been watching them (well, at least their foliage) carefully all summer. It's going to have to be extra special to spend the winter in the basement. I have more seeds to plant! Good luck Joan :)
I too have been wondering how soon I would have to move the brugs to a warmer location. My greenhouse is only 10 x 14 and I have a lot of other plants to winter over too. It was 38 degrees here this morning. Pretty nice in the daytime 72 degrees today. Donna
