brugs in rows

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I posted pics of these on another thread the same day I planted them but don't remember which one. Anyway they have been in the ground now for probably about 9 weeks and most of them came to me as rooted cuttings ranging in size from about 6 inches to a foot. I really didn't expect them to take off like they have and as you can see solid gold and pink favorite are blooming and almost all of the others have buds on them.I have 2 pics of these but am too stupid to figure out how to attach both to the same post so the second one will folow below

here's #2 and I know you can't really tell from the pictures but there are 26 brugs planted in that area that you see

Hey Cat, while you are playing with that camera, can I see more pictures of your greenhouse? Was it you that told me about the fiberglass panels??

Your brugs look awesome!!

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

probably, you know at 36 I think i'm probably the youngest person alive with alzheimers. I'll try and get a decent pic for you though. I have a few side panels out right now to allow for more air circulation and am getting ready to expand at least 6 more feet to the back.

My GH is a wood frame with corrugated fiberglass panels. We built it from plans. I have to take everything out in the summer, it gets so hot in there.

Oh Mary, I really like yours too! Would you mind to send me general information about it and roughly what it cost to build?

Jonesboro, GA(Zone 7b)

Very nice GH - wish I could expand mine! Don't you have a screen door, back window and maybe a fan for circulation?? A shade cloth would help too. It sure looks like a nice sturdy one.

Very nice GH Mary, and I know what you mean about it getting hot in side. I've had days that mine got up to 120 inside. I guess I should invest in some shade cloth maybe that would help. Though being in full sun does have an advantage during the winter.

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

It has shade cloth, door stays open 24/7, and has an exhaust fan, and circulation fans, but still gets over 100 in there.

Chele, I'll email you the info.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

same with mine except no shade cloth. It amazes me that with all that and an extra exhaust fan going it can still get up to 110 or so inside

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

They have new shade cloth that is silver, supposed to reduce the heat. I haven't tried it yet.
Mary, your greenhouse is very nice.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

I love that GH!!!!

My thermometer highest reading was 147 degrees, with both doors open but no fan........

good thing there were no plants in there.......

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Mary, thank you for the mail! I think that might be doable. I loved the 'visuals'. giggle Your's is very pretty. Did you say somewhere whether or not you heat it? You have a couple of zones on me.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Mmmm Like the GH. Going to have to kick DH in the butt to get him started on my new Hoop House. Says it's to hot now to build it.

Yes, it does freeze occasionally here, so last year I ran small portable electric heaters in there. Most times one was sufficient, but for a few nights I had to have 2 running. This year I have bought a portable heater thermostat, as most portable electric heaters don't come with an adequate thermostat, or if they do, it doesn't go low enough (you don't need to heat a greenhouse as warm as your house), so I found one that you just plug the thermostat in and then plug the heater into the thermostat, it can be set as low as 40 degrees. Charley's Greenhouse had them but they wanted almost $80 for them, so I did a search and found one for about half that.

I would suppose in zones colder than here, portable elec heaters might not be adequate enough. You may need to put gas heat in there, or even run 220 elec to have a more powerful electric heater.

Great brug garden Cat and I sure like your GH Mary. I am afraid to even mention hoophouse yet to my DH. He hurt his shoulder pounding in the anchor stakes last year and he still has not recovered. Nerve damage.

Thats a very nice set up indeed. Are your neighbors begging for cuttings yet? I'm still waiting on a few seedlings to bloom myself. This unbearably hot weather in San Antonio isn't the best for many of my Brugs, but on a brighter note, I am in the process of moving to a much cooler location.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

actually I have all of the brugs planted out back. Out of mind and out of sight of the neighbors. I live in a neighbor hood in which things that aren't nailed down tend to disappear very rapidly if you don't sleep with one eye open.
Before I really got into growing brugs I jsut had a CG plant and had one guy who stopped like clock work at the same time every year and always wanted evey cutting that I would give him for nothing. I know he ws rooting and selling them so I just started telling him NO. It got to the point with this person that I couldn't even go in my yard without him stopping and begging for something.

But in the location i'm in now everything goes out back out of sight except my sight.

I am almost ashamed to post pics of my GH after seeing Mary's. But here they are. This is made from a metal frame that you can purchase from wal-mart I think kmart store have them also. They usually are sold with a tarp and cost around $139. I trashed the tarp because someone gave me this frame and the cover was no good . The entire frame is welded together courtesy of my father and boxed in with 1x4 lumbers and then enclosed with opaque fiberglass panels. No plans needed. Just an idea in your head of what you would like to do. It has running water inside and electricity and will soon have gas heating. The overall size of this gh is 10H X 10W X 18L. It'll be 2 yrs old in March and served it's purpose very well this past winter.
I had everything from plumeria to brugs to cactus inside. You name it and it was in there and nothing was lost due to cold.
This is a full frontal shot

And here is a side view. I have a side panel out on each side right now to allow for more air circulation

you can probably tell from the pics that it is not 18ft long yet but i'm getting ready to add that extra 6ft to the back within the next few weeks

Hi Cat! Thanks a bunch for the pictures! I sure would not be embarrassed! Most of us don't have anything! You'd be amazed at what some of us have to go through to keep ANYTHING alive for the winter. I say if it is functional, it's a winner! The only difference I see between your's and Mary's is the wood trim and bottom. I guess it would be easy enough to change yours if you were so inclined-it would just take time and money! LOL But I say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!". I am still trying to find a way to justify spending the money. I have five kids and I am prego with number six, I need a new car and I want to quit my job. I just replaced ALL my appliances and bought a $600 camera. LOL Do I have the money? Yeah. But there are a whole lot of other things five little girls, hubby and me could spend it on. Oh, the guilt!

Marshfield, MO(Zone 6a)

Well, I would advise anybody who is thinking about building/buying a greenhouse, get one about twice the size you plan on, because they are never large enough once you get it. I am putting a second one out back this winter, will be a portable one, we bought this framing kit

http://www.gtsales.us/ezkit8x6.php

actually bought 2 of them, so we can make it 8 x 12 instead of 8 x 6, and will just cover will plastic, it can be easily put up and taken down come spring.

If I had it to do over again, the GH we built has a very steep pitch roof, and I would have made the side walls taller so there would be more head room.

Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I don't have any children badseed but can understand where you're coming from. Let me knock on wood I was fortunate enough to have had the frame, the wood, the lighting and my dads time and welding donated to me. All I had to buy was the fiberglass and that only ran me about $400. Not bad considering that I looked into getting a prefab gh that was only 8 x 10 and the place wanted almost $2000 for it. I had to assure them that just because I was born at night it sure as heck wasn't last night and they had to be crazy to expect someone to pay that much for that building.
I've read all of the posts on how some of you have to winter over your brugs. All I can say is you all are true brug lovers and have more determiantion to get them through the winter than I probably would have. I understand though that most of you all have extreme winters and have to take appropriate measures to insure survival of the plants. Thank goodness it doesn't get that cold here. Our winters usually run in the low to mid 30's generally with a lot of frost, no snow and no ground freezing.Every now and again like this past winter we will have a few nights go down into the 20's but it normally doesn't stay that way for long. That stuff is for the birds!
