For my raised beds, Alpine bed and peat bed I bought the following bulbs
Tulipa 'Little Princess'
Tulipa chrysanthe
Tulipa wilsoniana
Tulipa 'Persian Pearl'
Tulipa 'Eastern Star'
Tulipa batalinii 'Bright Gem'
Crocus 'Advance'
Crocus sieberi 'Violet Queen'
Iris reticulata 'Gordon'
Colchicum graecum
Colchicum cilicicum
Colchicum hungaricum
Colchicum hungaricum 'Velebit Star'
Colchicum trigynum
I think that is about it. Worked very hard planting today. Winter window boxes tomorrow.
bulb buying, by me, is over for this year
What do you do with "winter window boxes?"
LimeyLisa Kay
A winter window box is the same as any other window box except it is filled with winter flowers and spring bulbs. Mine have a layer of Narcissus 'February Gold' half way down. On top of these are small species Tulips as mentioned above. The next layer is mixed species Crocus and Galanthus nivalis. On the surface are trailing Ivies and winter Violas. The season goes from now right through to May when summer annuals are added
In my zone 5, that probably wouldn't work for me! I wish!
LOL

How deep is the container, Mark?
Limey why shouldnt it work? Why not do one with bulbs only?
Pardancanda the containers are about 12 inches deep and two wide
What a great idea! You should post this winter window box as a separate thread so more people would look at it.
I really went a bit nuts this year. But I controlled myself at Brent and Becky's because they only want orders for a minimum of 25 bulbs of the same type and species. I ordered the Decoy daffodil which has a cup of deep coral pink. From Park Seed I order Tahiti Double Daffodil, Blue Star Species Tulip and Plasir Species Tulip. From van Bourgondien, I ordered Dizzy Oriental Lily and Blushing Girl Tulip. However the one I am the most excited about is a Mexican Anise "Aztec Fire." This Illicum is almost too good to be true. It blooms and blooms all summer in the shade (which is mostly what I have) with deep red blooms that look something like small clematis blossoms. It is evergreen and hardy. I tried to order it last year but it was sold out. I jumped on it as soon as I got the catalog this time. It grows best in zones 6-9 and reaches 7 feet tall and 6 feet wide. I am so excited.
I will not post my order to Scheeper's yet because it is my largest and I am out of money this month, lol.
Edited for massive typos, misinformation, repetitions, etc. Oh well, it is early in the morning......

Wouldn't it freeze and unfreeze and heave etc in this kind of winter?
LimeyLisa Kay
I don't think that would hurt the hardy ones.
LimeyLisa, I don't think that would be a problem. if you had to, it would be a matter of just pushing the top plants back into the soil a little... I am going to try this!
Sounds cool...I might just do so as well!
LimeyLisa Kay
the top plants wont lift if they are well rooted into the compost
