Wasn't my goal to have a tropical looking bed, it just sort of happened.
My tropical looking bed
Great variety and design..
Wow,It looks great!!!gotta go look some more!
Kristi:
Your tropical bed is beautiful. I hate grass so I'm trying to achieve a tropical look throughout my entire yard. Each year I'll remove some grass and plant tropicals in it's place. :-)
Beautiful Kristi. Okay, showing my stupidity here. What is the dark leafed plant on the right of the second picture. Looks like it could be a canna maybe? Beautiful, whatever it is.
Beautiful Kristi!!
Kristi, it is gorgeous!! You definitely have the touch. Brenda
So just tell me why these things do not just happen to me? It is a beauty!
I, too, Brugie had my eye on that one!
Thank for all your kind comments! It is SO out of place in my neighborhood. It's hard to tell from the pictures but this is a HUGE bed and has become the focal point of the yard.
When we moved in we took out three dead cedar trees that were smack in the middle of this bed. In the front of the bed is a hedge of rhododendrons, it must be 20 feet long and planted on a curve. I didn't have the heart to rip them out and they look SO bad standing alone. So my idea was to create a bed around them and use the hedge as the back drop. Little plants wouldn't cut it in a bed that size. So my choice went to the tropical foliage plants. I need the large size. Everything you see planted there was planted in the spring. Not bad for a couple months of growing.
Shirley, the picture you see is Canna Intrique. This bed has lots of the purple/maroon foliage throughout the planting.
Kristi, I noticed in NJ that everyone had massive, perfectly manicured green lawns and huge trees but few flower beds. I kept thinking what a waste but then it was so hot and muggy I coud see where it would not be that much fun to be outside all day working.
However, there is such a GH effect there, the plants I planted outside for my Mom got huge. They were beautiful. Your bed must be incredibly beautiful in person. Do all your neighbors stop and comment?
Wow That's realy so beautiful!!!
Just saw this Kristi.........It is beautiful, now we know what you spend your time doing. Glad to see results from all the hard work.
All I can say is WOW...you have really worked hard and you have beautiful results ....hats off to you....you should enter the Landscape Contest.... :o)
Thanks Kristi. That is one canna I'm going to be on the lookout for. Great pictures.

Hey , what is that purplish plant that is taller than everything else? That is really cool. I want one! Does it like humidity and heat?

LOve your tropical bed, especially the contrasts in the textures and colors of the leaves. I have yet to master that, but I'm still young :)
