Passiflora edulis "Frederick"

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

This is my first year to grow Frederick. I thought some of you would be interested in this vines progress through a hot wet summer. It is flowering now and setting some fruit. I'm afraid that there will not be enough hot weather left to ripen the fruit.
Are any of you experienced with this vine?

This is the largest piece of fruit that I have found on Frederick. There are about 8 that I can see.

This trellis has 5 legs touching the ground. 2 are P. incarnata which have been eaten to the ground by caterpillars. One leg is an unknown edulis vine that just sat all summer. It is about 1 and a half ft. tall. The nice vines you can see in the pic. are 2 vines of Frederick that have taken over the whole trellis. It is healthy and gulf fritillary caterpillars do not like it.

If I may ask, where did you get your p. edulis 'Frederick'? This is one I've been trying to get, but don't have a source for.

Thanks.

I went back to look a the Frederick again and would like to know how old is the plant in the photo?? And the photo shown in the 3rd post is Frederick the largest? ... :o)

Covington, LA(Zone 8b)

All you can see in the 3rd post is Frederick. It is a combination of 2 vines. One vine was received last fall and spent the winter in a cool greenhouse. The other vine was bought last spring from Ransom Gardens in Houston. This is it's first year in the ground. I guess it will have to be potted and put in the greenhouse for the winter.
Yesterday I took this picture.

Gosh Flicker thats GREAT, I didn't know the fruits got that big........thanks for the photo.......

I know where Ransom Gardens is in Houston.......Also I found another nursury close to me that has several varities of Passies, couldn't get over to that part of the nursury cause there little bridge was under water...will go back later and look......I'll keep you posted as to what they have.......

And the plants you sent me are both doing real good, already begining to show new growth..I put them in larger pots this morning... :o)

WillowWasp, you should go to Ransom's site and sign up for the newsletter. They have the occassional sale on passi's.
I'm going to Houston with a group of friends at the end of Oct. and will try to strong arm them to going to Ransom Gardens. They are not as plant crazed as I am.
Let me know what kinds the other nursery has.
Also, the Frederick plants that I planted last spring were only a little larger than what I sent you. They were only rooted cuttings. Frederick doesn't grow when it is cool. It took the extreme heat and rain to get it started. In your zone, it would have even more hot days to ripen the fruit.

Here is the nice sized trunk on this passionvine. Frederick is a winner! If only it was a little more hardy.
