Bugs??????

Can anyone share with me what you all use to keep bugs from eating the leaves??????

Depends on what's eating them. For caterpillars, use Dipel or Bt. For snails, use snail and slug bait/pellets. For other bugs, some use systemic rose stuff, others use a variety of spray on insecticides like pyrethrum and Orthene. For mites, some use Avid, others use soap, alcohol and water.

If you don't have those particular insecticides and bait, give Sevin a try. It will stop some things, but like Cala said, to be specific, we would have to know what is eating the leaves. Right now, the grasshoppers are doing a good number on my brug leaves, but it is so close to the end of the season for me that I'm not going to worry about it. Besides, I have no idea what to use to get them. Not sure there is anything that works well.

I have those bugs that look like the ladybugs but aren't. They are eating round holes in EVERYTHING!!! Yuck.

Sounds like the cucumber beetle. They are nasty and just love brug blooms.

Here is a link with info about cucumber beetles http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/Vegetables/veg025e/veg025e.htm

I've been noticing for the past week that something has been eating the leaves of my brug cuttings and small brugs that I have on the patio waiting to be potted up. After reading these posts, I went out to inspect them again this morning, as I hadn't been able to find anything on them before. Lo and behold, I found the little green alien. It was a tiny little green worm. Don't know what it is, but guess I'll have to get some BT. Does that stand for "begone thucker?" LOL

Thanks Susie. I found this while surfing around. Lots of good information at this site: http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/Entomology/entfacts/efhtmlst.htm

Sylvia........good thinking!! LOL!

Thanks for the replies. I think the grasshoppers are doing alot of it. We have had hardly any rain all summer. Our back 4 acres of field is dead except for a few weeds, and thousands of grasshoppers. No I understand how out west they can fly in and wipe out a whole crop. They are everywhere. The only thing that might be good to come of it may be that their feces will fertilize if anything is left to grow. Ha.Ha.

Kell, it is not the kind of grasshopper we have here. I think it is a Katydid. Donna

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Thanks Donna, but I do not think we get Katydids here. At least I have never heard of them. Gee, it never occurred to me to kill it.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

All about Katydids. They will eat the flowers and leaves on your brugs in case you didn't know. http://www.fcps.k12.va.us/StratfordLandingES/Ecology/mpages/true_katydid.htm
