New member says hello

Austin, TX(Zone 8a)

I guess I'll take the plunge and be one of the first members to introduce myself on The Welcome Mat. I've already gotten my feet wet by posting a few things on the forums. I'm usually a lurker when it comes to mailing lists and forums, but everyone here has been so friendly and welcoming that I felt comfortable enough to post right away!

I'm new to gardening. I made my first attempts last year when I tried to plant impatients and hostas in my shady front yard. I learned there was a big difference between "shade" and the "dappled shade" that I have - the plants ended up frying in July under those bits of late afternoon sun. I'm hoping to make a better go of it this year by trying some different plants. I figure some will make it and some won't, but it will be a great learning experience. Eventually I hope to have a front yard I can be proud of, but for now the neighbors will just have to be patient :)

Welcome, Amari!!

A Big Welcome from West Kentucky!!

Austin, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks for the warm welcomes everyone! As to what I'm trying this year - well, a little bit of everything anyone suggests to me :) So far, I've started with purple and white Periwinkles (Catharanthus rosea) under the crepe myrtle where the impatients fried last year. The Periwinkles were marked for "full sun" so they may not do well, but what the heck - I do know from experience that this spot gets a good amount of blistering late afternoon sun during July and August (but not much sun at all in May or June.) I put Salvia, Torenia, Fan Flower, Mexican Heather and Japanese Beech Fern in other places. I stuck the Fan Flower in a spot that gets a good amount of sun now, but I have no idea what this spot will look like in July. Any suggestions are most welcome as I still have a lot of bare spots to fill up with *something*. The entire area is covered with this "dappled shade" that shifts as the months go by which is very frustrating - maybe I should switch to container gardening so I can move things around?

Welcome Amari to Dave's Garden. Sure you will enjoy it as much as I do. Looking forward to chatting with you in the chat room.

A big WELCOME from another Texan.

I know what you mean about 'frying' plants. I, too, have learned that 'plant in full sun' really means to plant in part shade in Texas! The only things I can grow in full sun are daylilies and roses.

Best wishes

Welcome Amari, from your neighboring state of La. I wish our roads were as good as yours are. LOL I know you are going to just love this place. I am fairly new but just jumping in to forums and boards and posting and meeting people. Hope to see your postings in the near future. I know exactly about hot afternoon sun and dappled shade. My entire back yard is like that. Then again , with the La. and Texas heat it's enough to fry me as well as my plants. Have a great time at DG you will love it. Pam aka Lazy Daisy
