What a showy plant! Since it's monocarpic, does that mean that all those that are blooming in the other picture will die after this season?

It suckers, like most bromeliads. So while it's flowering, small suckers (1-2 usually) are forming at the plant's base, and those, in turn, will flower in a few years (under perfect conditions only).

I think thats a picture of V. 'Splendide' not V. splendens. V. splendens only has one paddle I believe.

No, you are right... hadn't really noticed that this species never had branching flowers
