Here's a seedling in a bucket from the big semianual bamboo sale in Encinitas, California (last weekend)... didn't buy anything, but they had several hundred species for sale there. Huge turnout, too.
I have a question -- can you trim this so that it doesn't get over 15-20 feet or so? I don't want anything too tall, but this looks really pretty. I know nothing about bamboo and am just starting my search for a clumping type that won't totally block the sun in my backyard. However, I need a bamboo that will tolerate sun and is hardy to about 10 degrees F.
I live in Houston, TX and have a 40 ft fence I am trying to screen. I just ordered ten 1 gallon clumps. Does anyone have any suggestions regarding spacing? Any suggestions on separating the roots before planting to enhance linear coverage. I do not want much depth. I would prefer two to three trunks deep. Am I being unrealistic on any of this?

This particular Bamboo would not make it at 10F.......it suffers in the winter months here with lows in the upper 30'sF.

Which Bamboo did you order? This particular one is a clumper not a runner. A runner is probably what you want for a screen. Mine started out in a 24" box about 5+ years ago and the clump is now about 10' in diameter. If you are putting in a running type you will need a barrier to keep it in bounds. Running a three strand heavy wire fence to tie the very tall young culms to helps to train it as a screen. I'm certainly no expert on Bamboo, so you should probably visit the Bamboo Forum here on DG (you would need to subscribe to be able to join the discussions).
There's some great information at this link from Bamboo Giant
