Astounding!
Where did you find this giant?
I grow them - About a month after this photo, this plant actually broke off of the tuber. I had to cut off all the stems and leaves except for one and moved it to a new location. Without stems and leaves, the plant weighed 75 pounds. I have several approaching 12 feet now - but I have moved them into a more shaded area to slow their growth.
Wow! I have grown them but they didn't perform very well, certainly nothing like that one!
Indiana may be a bit chilly in the winter so that the plant starts later and has a significantly reduced growing season. Actually, I am a bit suprised it survives the winter up there. Tannia does like lots of moisture, morning sun, and fertile soil.
This photo slipped by me!AKing1A,that is amazing!!!!!!
Mercy me!!
That's a beaut! I better get me a big pot and set aside a corner of my ghouse!
Nice plant, aking1! And a big welcome to DG!
Gosh, that is beautiful. Are you able to leave it in the ground all year? Where would one buy this one? Would love to get my hands on a tuber for next year. I'm still waiting on Portei to get a bug jump in size. It is supposed to grow like yours, but after having it all summer, it is just now beginning to grow.
Just did some looking around. Do I understand that this is the same thing as the melanga, even tho I read that there are about 40 varieties? Holy Cow!! I'm going to be lost in ears next year. I'm going to the Oriental Store this winter and see what I can find. Thanks for getting me excited about ears again. Can never have enough!!

That's a monster brug!
HAH!....Leave it to Cala to notice the Brug! (Dr. Suess, is it?)
Oh my gosh what a plant! You need a dinosaur to go with it.
The photo of the Brug is on the way - 14-15 ft tall, 30 ft wide, 500 + blooms at the same time --- 4-5 times per year. I put it in Dr Seuss though I am not positive that is correct. I grew it from a 4 inch stem cutting.
The Tannia stays in the ground but freezes off. Tannia is one of the "old" garden favorites and I have never seen any nursery sell them. I just donated 20 pups and a couple of 3 gal sizes to our Botanic Garden. I grew this one from a pup - no more than 6 inches tall when I saw it first.
After this photo was taken, heavy rain caused it to break off of the tuber - so I cut all but one leaf and carried all 75 pounds of the remaining plant across the yard and replanted it. Without a tuber, it grew only 6 ft this year but has started growing the new tuber with a vengence. The old tuber now sports a 10 ft ear and it will top 12 ft next year.
I have another one this year that is almost as big and will be larger next year if there are no hurricanes.
Wow! What a huge plant! I must put it on my list to get me one! I know I able to grow this one here with all my tropical plants!
I think I know where to find them at Forest Hill,LA ( Several nurseries)
Oh my wow HUGE and so pretty.
Just wanted to bump this up,what a great picture!
