If anybody out there still needs water lettuce, please post or E me. I can't even see the fish anymore. LOL
I still have too much water lettuce!
Just a word of caution--you can't ship that to all states. It is banned in some states to ship it. FL is one of them and I'm sure there are others. It's too invasive. Water hiacynth is another one that's banned.
Yep, I know. Thank you for the friendly warning. :)
Hi Chele, IMHO at this time of the year you will be well off to compost it. This plant is a tropical so it won't last much longer anyway and the nutrients that it has gotten from the water will help your garden plants later.
Yeah I know Lani. I just thought I would offer the chance to someone who might not have them. Darn things are $4 a pop around here. That's a couple hundred dollars worth of compost! LOL
Badseed you've got mail!
Hey Koko, I haven't received any message? Not a big deal unless you did send one. LOL
I know Chele although some people may not know that they are tropical. It is so hard to toss them when you pay so much for them in the spring. I got off easy though as a local place has them for $1 in the spring.
Solid gold compost. lol
But I did send you an e-mail :(
I'll try again.
Does anyone in cold zones try to overwinter them? How do you do it? I would like to try to save mine. :)
I don't know of anyone having luck with it. I have heard all kinds of ideas from floating them in aquariums to potting them up. I don't know how those turned out. Kind of ridiculous, you pay $4 for one, wait for it to multiply then have to pull 90% out, send it south, then have to do it again the next year. LOL
I wish Santa would bring me a greenhouse! :)
I'm just stubborn enough (and frugal enough!!!) to try to save them. Sigh....and the water hyacinth too.
You and me both sister! LOL What I would not give for a big nice glass house!
We overwintered some water lettuce and water hyacinth in an aquarium one time. It worked fairly well but it's the summer that does them in here and we don't bother to try to grow them anymore. You will end up tranferring some wildlife into the house, so I don't recommend putting them in an aquarium with tropical fish. We raised a lot of snails and hydras and even had a mayfly in the house.
LOL Now that is something to think about. When I first read through your reply I thought you said manfly. giggle. It took me a minute to think about that.
Chele, that is the man who flys around doing housework all day long so you can relax and enjoy what you want to. A very rare bird indeed!
BTW, I went to a local nursery yesterday and they have curly water lettuce! I had never read about that one or seen it anywhere before. It is really pretty with ruffles. I am really considering getting some to put it through winter as I have done in the past with the regular stuff.
I think Hippos eat it! LOL
Cool! I'll go get a hippo! :)
LOL, Ponditis....pleeeeeze share your lettuce and other pond plant keeping tips!
Badseed, you want a Great White Shark to go with that hippo???? (Really, there's a thread in DG somewhere that links to a guy from FL selling sharks!!! They have to come inspect your pond before they let you have it ;>)
B fly Gardnr, I started another thread rather than hyjacking Badseeds.
I think it would survive our usually mild winters here. Want to ship some my way?
Well if some fell into your box, how could I be held responsible?? LOL
I did see the shark one! Some sort of fish auction. LOL I don't think my pond would pass. Mr. Sharkie would be out of room in no time. Then there is the small issue of the kids being shark food. giggle
Well when you can have kids as fast as some people around here can, you don't really have to worry about them being shark food because there is always another coming along to feed the shark. *sinister giggle*
