How long...........
three to 9 months. I think in 5a you must wait for about 5-6 months. Most times.
oh wow.........that's a long time.......lol
never realized it would take 'that' long. No wonder the seeds are not easy to come by ;)
Yes! :-)
Ye gads..............9 months..........just like being PG!!!!! :>)
well it's going to be exciting once it's done........LOL
it grows just a bit each day. I'm just beside myself cuz I pollinated it myself........LOL
flowox--pollenating may be old hat to some here but to me--well, You Done Good!!!!!
thanks playsndirt :)
I still can't believe that I actually did it.........LOL
Flow, the pod will grow a bit then it will quit growing while the seeds inside mature. Usually the pedicel that holds the pod to the stem of the plant will turn yellow when the pod is mature. I'm a little south of you and most of my pods take almost exactly 4 months to mature, even in the winter time in the gh.
OH NO, 3-9 months!! I guess I'm going to have a problem with my first seed pod. I just found a few on my Charles Grimaldi brug but it will frost soon. If I bring in this brug in can I keep it growing so the seeds mature? I thought I was going to let it go dormant, but now that I saw the seeds I don't know what to do. How long can you store brug seeds, I found some in my fridge last week from last fall that I got in a trade, will they still be good? I'm new to brugs and I have not grown any from seed, how long do they take to germinate? And how long do they take to bloom? Thanks, Cathy
Cathy, I've brought brugs inside to keep the pods from getting frosted on.
I've also cut off stems with the pods on them and sometimes they go ahead and mature. I did that with a CG once that was in the ground and the pod was about 2 months away from being ripe. I whacked off the limb, removed all the leaves and stuck it in potting soil and it rooted and the pod matured.
I've planted seeds that were a year old and some germinated. The best way to improve the germination is to peel and soak the seeds overnight. Seems to give them a boost to get started.
Wonderful, I will try to cut it off before frost and pot it up, I hate to lose my first brug seeds. Do you peel the seeds first then soak them or do you soak then peel? Thanks for all your help!! Cathy
Cathy, try air layering below the pod. That should give you a head start on rooting.
I always peel my seeds before soaking them. Sometimes if the outer corky seedcoat is too hard to peel, I'll soak them in warm water for an hour or so, blot dry and then peel.
Flow,
I am verry sorry.
Watch your pods. You will see by yourself.
Question: 7 a is Texas?
Just to make it pure for me.
Great, I will try to get these brug seeds I found growing. And I think I will also try to air layering this brug, the seed pod is right in the middle of a Y so I'll do this below the Y, how many inches below should I do this? Cathy
Cathy, you need to leave enough growth below the Y to have something to stick in the pot!
Ludger, I think after growing about 500 pods to maturity, I know what I'm talking about too. Some species do take longer, some take less. Didn't Kyle have one mature in 2.5 months? Don't the sanguineas take a lot longer? I don't have those, too hot here.
why are you sorry Ludger? I'm excited.......LOL
Flow, you will get a mail from me.(later)
No fun to reply here.
Susie, you are so right, I would like to see the seedlings.
500 pods should have given anything stunning.
Sorry to all of you, am a brugnut. Only like to chat about brugs.Nothing else.
I'll be waiting for your mail :)
During wintertime.I will reply.
